Student Worker Application Process

Step 1: Activate Handshake & apply for positions

All current on-campus openings can be found and applied to in Handshake, JCC’s employment and career readiness platform. To apply to open positions, you must:

  1. Activate your Handshake account.
  2. Search for on-campus jobs.
  3. Complete a resume, submit it and apply to each office you’re interested in.
  4. Interview with any offices that contact you and would like to chat with you further about their open positions.
  5. Accept or decline any positions offered to you.

International students: As an international student studying in the U.S., your ability to work and participate in training opportunities is limited by U.S. law. If you engage in employment without proper authorization, there are serious consequences that can impact your ability to study, travel, or work in the U.S. throughout your life. In addition to activating Handshake and applying for positions, you must schedule an appointment with Global Learning, who will help you obtain authorization, ensure that you are following U.S. law, and apply for a Social Security Card.

Step 2: Student worker hiring process

If a job offer is extended and you accept it, you will work with your supervisor and Human Resources to complete new hire paperwork.

Human Resources will email you required federal, state, and JCC forms to finalize your hiring:

Your supervisor will send you the student worker form specific to your department and job description.

Step 3: Once all paperwork is submitted

  1. Your supervisor will be notified by Human Resources approving your hire as a student worker. You will get an email from Clear Company with the remaining new hire documents to complete (ex. tax forms). You cannot start working until your background check has completed and all other employment paperwork is finished. Please do your part by completing and submitting all forms and documents needed as quickly as possible.
  2. You and your supervisor will work together to create a start date and schedule of your working hours and job tasks.
  3. If you are a new student worker who has never held an on-campus job before, you must attend a New Student Worker Orientation session before you can begin working on campus. Orientations are held every Monday from 12:30-1 p.m. in COCE 60 and via Zoom. If you cannot attend, you are responsible for scheduling an appointment with Career Services via Starfish for a 1:1 orientation.
