JCC support for emergency situations

The Jayhawk Emergency Fund provides financial assistance for Jamestown Community College students in emergency situations, so you can continue to pursue your education.

Emergency situations can include instances affecting:

  • Housing/utilities 
  • Food 
  • Transportation 
  • Medical care 
  • Childcare
Applicant Eligibility & Funding
  • Eligible applicants must be enrolled at JCC as full-time, matriculated students in the semester the application is being submitted. Enrollment will be verified.
  • Funding is limited to a one-time-per-semester grant not to exceed $500.
  • Funding will be paid to the third party provided when possible.
Types of Emergencies & Eligible Expenses

Emergencies are typically unexpected occurrences that may adversely impact a student’s ability to cover the cost of basic needs or essential living expenses. Situations that may trigger financial distress:

  • Housing insecurities (ex. threat of eviction, homelessness)
  • Basic needs insecurities (ex. clothing, menstrual supplies, groceries)
  • Unexpected damaged or stolen property (ex. fire, flood, theft, break-in)
  • Unforeseen accident or medical/dental expenses
  • Domestic or relationship violence
  • Inability to access employment and/or loss of employment
  • Unexpected travel expenses
  • Unanticipated change in financial aid award causing financial hardship

Examples of eligible expenses:

  • Child or family care
  • Food
  • Hygiene supplies
  • Medical or dental expenses not covered by insurance
  • Rent or other housing
  • Utilities
  • Computer repair/replacement
  • Replacement of stolen item(s) needed for education
  • Personal automobile expenses
  • Transportation
  • Emergency travel

Examples of ineligible expenses:

  • Tuition and fees
  • Required course materials (ex. textbooks, lab equipment, software, pens, paper)
  • Credit card debt
  • Cable/streaming bills
  • Legal representation
  • Long-term or ongoing expenses

This is not a complete list of eligible/ineligible expenses. All requests may not be fulfilled.

Application Details & Timeline

Applications will be accepted during the fall and spring semesters. The Jayhawk Emergency Fund is unavailable during summer sessions.

Apply for an emergency grant after other methods of funding have been exhausted. Request only the amount needed, as funding is limited.

  • Applications will be prioritized based on detailed review of need.
  • Clearly identify the amount and purpose of funds requested.
  • Only complete applications will be considered.

Applications will be reviewed regularly, with the intention to determine award decisions within five to seven business days of application submission. Additional documentation or follow-up may be required before finalizing a decision.

Applications will be treated as private, but in some circumstances may be shared beyond the committee as needed to process funding requests and ensure the proper welfare of applicants depending on the emergency.
