SUNY JCC Student Follows Family Footsteps Into Welding

In a lot of ways, welding is in Jacob Elliott’s genes. 

His grandfather, Bob Elliott, was a welder for a long time at Dresser-Rand in Olean and still teaches the craft to students at SUNY Jamestown Community College. Elliott’s father also welded. 

"My grandpa always had stuff lying around the house,” Elliott said. “I was always questioning what it was. The idea of welding kind of intrigued me. So I went and I took it at BOCES for my junior and senior year, and then it brought me here.”

JAMESTOWN, N.Y. — SUNY JCC Workforce Development is offering new professional and supervisory courses and programs on the Jamestown and Cattaraugus County campuses.

These professional development and supervisory opportunities are scheduled through April. They vary from one-day to multiple-day trainings.

JAMESTOWN, N.Y. – Five published authors from SUNY Jamestown Community College’s faculty will share their original works during a poetry reading on the Jamestown Campus. 

The event, which is free and open to the public, is scheduled for 12:15-1:15 p.m. on March 6 at the Weeks Gallery on the second floor of the Sheldon Center.

JAMESTOWN, N.Y. — Scandinavian Culture Days come to the SUNY Jamestown Community College Jamestown Campus starting in March. 

These gatherings are scheduled for 9:30 a.m. to noon on March 1, April 5, and May 3 in the Hamilton Collegiate Center Student Union and Café. They are free and open to the public. 

Culture Days focus on Swedish culture and the Swedish-American experience, though one does not need to be of Swedish origin to attend. Each date will also offer workshops, presentations, and Swedish-inspired food, lingonberry juice, and coffee.

The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing will visit SUNY Jamestown Community College on March 26 to conduct a site visit for continuing accreditation of its Associate in Applied Science Nursing program

The site team invites the public to meet them and share comments about the program in person at 3:30 p.m. that day at the following JCC locations: 

Cattaraugus County Campus: College Center boardroom, 260 N. Union St., Olean

Crystal Rose-Williams, interim vice president of Student Affairs, and Jessica Kubiak, vice president of Academic Affairs, have announced the names of 118 students who were awarded degrees or certificates from SUNY Jamestown Community College’s Cattaraugus County and Jamestown campuses. Eleven students earned highest honors (4.0 GPA), 48 earned high honors (3.50-3.99 GPA), and 19 earned honors (3.25-3.49 GPA).

Daniel Gonzalez intensely flips through the pages of a thick black binder. He’s almost to the letter he needs.  

The papers and certificates protected by plastic sleeves whizzing by tell the story of Gonzalez’s life in the military. It’s what he calls a “love me” book. Almost all veterans have one.

JAMESTOWN, N.Y. — Seventeen original works of poetry were submitted for SUNY Jamestown Community College’s annual student poetry contest. 

Four winners in written and spoken categories were announced after students shared their spoken poetry with classmates, faculty, and staff in the Jamestown Campus Student Union on Wednesday afternoon.
