Online Learning

How online learning works

Learning online at Jamestown Community College means that your instructors provide all instruction through an online platform. Like on-campus courses, online courses have specific start and end dates according to JCC’s academic calendar.

JCC instructors primarily deliver instruction and course content through our learning system, Brightspace. In Brightspace, you can access your online courses, syllabus, assignments, and grades. You may also participate in classroom discussions through written word forums and webinars.

For most online courses at JCC, you can log in 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Types of online classes

JCC offers online classes in three different modalities. Check the credit course schedule to determine the options available for your specific classes.

Online Synchronous Classes

Online synchronous classes meet at a specific time each week through a video conferencing platform, such as Zoom. You will see the class meeting times when registering for the course. Your instructor will provide you with a link to join the class sessions.

Get the most out your synchronous sessions by actively participating in the sessions.

Online Asynchronous Classes

Online asynchronous classes give students flexibility because they do not have specific class meeting times. However, these courses will have regularly-scheduled online activities that you'll need to participate in and complete on time. Instructors of online asynchronous courses may interact with you in a number of ways despite not having specific class meeting times. Some examples include:

  • Responding to discussion posts
  • Regular announcements and emails
  • Feedback on assignments
  • Virtual office hours and/or help sessions

Online courses may require exam proctoring (either virtually or at a location convenient to the student). Check your course syllabus or talk with your instructor.

Hybrid (Online & Zoom)

In this hybrid online option, students will meet virtually during a set meeting time each week. You will be aware of the meeting time and be given the virtual meeting information. This will account for a portion of the class. The remainder of the class meeting time each week will be spent asynchronously.

NC-SARA

Jamestown Community College has been approved by New York State to participate in the National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements. NC-SARA is a voluntary, regional approach to state oversight of postsecondary distance education.

NC-SARA makes it easier for students to take online courses and transfer those credits from postsecondary institutions in other states by establishing national standards among member schools.
