Advice for Honors students
JCC’s honors program offers you the opportunity to develop the skills that transfer institutions and future employers look for when they review your transcripts and resumes. You will be challenged to think in new ways as you prepare for success. Here is some advice that will help you succeed.
Be open to new ideas
- Be open to using a different set of intellectual skills and thinking processes than what the typical course requires.
- Anticipate the challenge of examining beliefs and ideas you held upon entering college, thinking carefully and critically about them, and approaching them from different points of view.
Step outside your comfort zone
- Explore topics outside of the path you believe you have set for yourself.
- See the world with fresh eyes.
- Developing a broader understanding of what higher education offers.
Think positively
- Think about your purpose. What do you want to accomplish? Create a vision for your life.
- Give yourself permission to dream about your own possibilities.
- Your potential is limitless, and the honors program is a great place to start your journey!
Enhance your study habits
- Develop better time management and organization.
- Be committed to your education.
- Know your goals, both long-term and short-term.
- Prioritize wisely. Categorize what is important and urgent, and what is not. Make lists and stick to them.
- Plan ahead. Give yourself time in the evening to organize for the following day.
- Take care of yourself, and give yourself time to rest.
Keep your eye on the prize
- Reaffirm your commitment to achieving more than just a line on a transcript.
- Join forces with like-minded individuals. Surrounding yourself with driven, effective people is a proven way to help you succeed. Proximity can be an excellent motivator.
- Let your goals grow.

Live proactively & develop important life skills
- Take steps to avoid procrastination.
- Meet regularly with your JCC advisor.
- Start early on your honors projects.
- Take notes.
- Believe in yourself.
