SUNY Jamestown Community College celebrated the achievements of its Honors students during the fall semester Student Showcase on Friday, Dec. 5.
Formerly known as Scholars Day, the JCC Student Showcase provides a platform for students to share their stories, academic accomplishments, and applied learning experiences with the campus community.
This year’s showcase featured projects in two categories — applied learning and academic accomplishments — highlighting the depth and breadth of work completed by Honors students throughout the semester. Eighteen students from the Jamestown and Cattaraugus County campuses participated, with 17 delivering approximately 10-minute presentations on their projects.
In the applied learning category, Shannagh Murphy earned first place for the project “The Wings of Tamnaeth.” Murphy’s faculty mentor was Karen Weyant, associate professor of English.
Jack Tupper placed second with the project “Lean Implementation Through Creating a Custom Tool Shadow Board for the Lathe.” His faculty mentor was Timothy Griffin, assistant professor of mechanical technology.
In the academic accomplishments category, Liaho Masisi earned first place for the project “Do Correctional Facilities Truly Work? An Insider Perspective Through Field Observation and Research.” Masisi’s faculty mentor was Marilyn Gerace, assistant professor of criminal justice.
Silence Karl placed second for the project “Myth Busting Modern Wealth.” Karl’s faculty mentor was Dion Daly, assistant professor of business.
“The Honors Student Showcase gives students the opportunity to connect their academic work to real-world skills they can carry into careers or transfer pathways,” said Julie Page, JCC Career Services navigator. “Presenting their research and applied projects helps students build confidence, practice professional communication, and better understand how their experiences translate beyond the classroom.”
The Honors Student Showcase reinforces JCC’s commitment to experiential learning, academic inquiry, and student success by providing meaningful opportunities for students to present their work, strengthen communication skills, and engage with the broader college community.
