Dottie Oakley never thought about teaching until she saw a newspaper ad for a job opening at SUNY Jamestown Community College. 

It was 1981, and she needed to return to Cattaraugus County to help care for her mother. 

OLEAN, N.Y. — SUNY Jamestown Community College celebrated the 50th anniversary of its Cattaraugus County Campus during a gathering of about 150 people Thursday night at the Olean YMCA. 

Addressing a group of attendees that included elected officials, faculty and staff, alumni, students, JCC board of trustees members, business leaders, and individuals who have supported the college over the years, JCC President Daniel DeMarte stressed that the campus’ greatest strength is its connection to the community.

Life as a SUNY Jamestown Community College student in Olean in the late 1980s looked a little different than it does today. 

Just ask Meme Yanetsko. 

SUNY Jamestown Community College’s 2026-27 History and Culture Film Series kicks off with showings of “Amistad” at the Jamestown and Cattaraugus County campuses. 

The Steven Spielberg classic will be shown at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23, at the Jamestown Campus Scharmann Theatre and at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30, at the Cattaraugus County Campus Cutco Theater in Olean. 

Each screening will be followed by a moderated discussion. Admission is free and open to the public. 

As employers across the region continue to look for ways to strengthen their teams and develop their employees, SUNY Jamestown Community College is offering many professional development opportunities this fall through its Workforce Development department. 

The fall schedule includes courses focused on communication, team building, leadership, human resources, project management, and other skills that can benefit professionals at a variety of career stages.

Dale Yerpe was there in 1976 when SUNY Jamestown Community College first opened its doors in Olean. Fifty years later, he's still on campus, still teaching English.
