Not Sure What to Major In?

We can help with your first steps!

At Jamestown Community College, we’re here to help you explore your options, discover your strengths, and start building a path that feels right for you.

You don’t have to figure it out on your own! JCC's Success Center will help you every step of the way.

Step 1: Apply to JCC as Individual Studies

If you’re undecided, JCC's Individual Studies programs give you flexibility while you explore different academic areas and careers.

When you select Individual Studies, you’ll also choose a career community. JCC’s career communities connect you with faculty, classmates, and courses in related fields of study:

Step 2: Work with your career counselor

When you choose Individual Studies, you’ll be assigned a career counselor through the Success Center. Your counselor will help you discover what excites you and where your skills and interests can thrive.

In the Individual Studies program, your career counselor will help you:

  • Choose electives that spark your curiosity.
  • Build a personalized schedule that balances graduation requirements with new academic areas.
  • Consider an interactive course like Life and Career Planning or Exploring Careers to better understand your strengths, interests, and career possibilities.
  • Update your Individualized Career Plan based on the field of study that you decide to pursue.
  • Find your career path through assessments, career exploration, and reflection.

Your career journey is a process, and it’s okay to not have all the answers right now! You can take time to learn more about yourself and what you want in a career.

Timeline tip: If your goal is to graduate in two years, it’s helpful to have a general career direction by your second semester.
