To meet the growing regional need for skilled workers, SUNY Jamestown Community College’s Workforce Development launched intensive 10-week Maintenance Technician and Machining/CNC Operator programs. Two cohorts have since graduated from these programs. As a next-step in the development of this new course offering, SUNY JCC’s Workforce Development is establishing an instructor team for part-time and on-call teaching openings.
“These workforce teaching opportunities would be ideal for skilled maintenance technicians and manufacturing engineers who are close to or recently retired, or for techs and vocational teachers looking for after-hours projects,” notes Brian LeBarron, the Business Development Manager at JCC. “Sharing working-world skills, best practices, and experience are a key advantage of Workforce Development programs. This is a great opportunity for the best amongst our industries to pass on their knowledge and experience to the next generation of workers.”
Over the course of 2020, JCC’s Workforce Development engaged in a feasibility study to examine four potential program areas. The study worked closely with community and industry leaders in the JCC service area, which includes Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, and Allegany counties. The results showed positive projections for skills development and training within JCC’s service area.
As a result, there are other advanced-manufacturing courses and programs offered that would benefit from local instructors, such as: Industrial Shop Math, Blueprint Reading, Metrology, Electrical Fundamentals, Motors Controls and Drives, Digital Electronics and Sensors, Fluid Power, Robot Operations and Programming (Fanuc), PLC Intro-Advanced (RSLogix 5000 & Siemens), and Controls System Troubleshooting. Teaching opportunities are available on a per-course basis.
