JAMESTOWN, N.Y. — For the first time in its history, the Scharmann Theatre at SUNY Jamestown Community College will serve as a co-sponsor and venue for the Jamestown Dance Festival, bringing a workshop and two performances to campus in September.
This collaboration brings internationally acclaimed artists and regional talent to JCC’s Jamestown Campus, offering students and the public the opportunity to engage with the world of contemporary and classical dance. Admission to each of the events is $10 for the public and free for JCC students.
The series kicks off with the Les Ballet Afrik Vgueing workshop at 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4. Open to all experience levels, renowned choreographer and dancer Omari Wiles delivers an energizing session that explores the artistry, history, and expressive technique of ballroom culture.
A Bronx-raised dancer born in Senegal, Wiles is the founder of the House of Oricci, creator of the signature “AfrikFusion” style, and a standout figure in the global dance scene. His work has been featured in Dance Magazine, Vogue, and The New York Times, and he has worked with Beyoncé, Madonna, and Janet Jackson.
Indian Classical Night takes the stage after the workshop at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 4. The show features masterful solo and ensemble performances from Sri Thina Dance and Sukanya Burman, outstanding artists rooted in rich classical traditions.
The dance festival concludes at Scharmann Theatre at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, with a regional artist showcase. The afternoon of performances highlights bold, original work from emerging and established artists across the region, including MahataMmoho Collective of Buffalo, led by founder and director Megan A. Evans-Rakeepile, as well as Jamestown’s Grace Gibbons and Sugar Grove's Star Larson.
