Colette Haight, coordinator of academic advising, counselor, and associate professor at SUNY Jamestown Community College, says that a half-day event called Accepted Student Day is an easy way for new students to gain tools that they will use to navigate their college journey.
Accepted Student Day is a relaxed opportunity to learn how to register for classes, navigate student accounts, what services are available and how to access them, and get a sneak peek into living on campus. These events are available in both on-campus and virtual formats. Accepted Student Day does not take the place of new student orientation, which will happen later in the summer.
“Students attending Accepted Student Day will be able to meet our team of success navigators, who act as a single point of contact from enrollment to commencement,” Haight shares. “Throughout the student’s experience at JCC, they can send a text or email to their success navigator to ask a question or to connect with campus supports and resources. Navigators will also reach out to students at various points of the semester to remind them of important dates and other information.”
While at Accepted Student Day, new students can also meet faculty and staff, tour residence halls, and visit offices like Financial Aid and Accessibility. Haight says she sees a difference in confidence and preparedness in students who attend.
“It really eases their transition,” Haight explains. “Students who attend Accepted Student Day are much more informed and have gained an understanding of fundamental pieces of their college experience, so they are more ready for their next steps.”
