Community Narrative: JCC Story — 4195
HMT 8515 – 4 credits
Jonathan D. O'Brian, Karen J. Weyant

From its founding 75 years ago by a group of forward-thinking local leaders, JCC has always been more than an educational institution. It's a self-made community of learners that takes its meaning and purpose from the surrounding communities it serves. This class offers a unique opportunity for students in the humanities, social sciences, and beyond to examine JCC through various lenses of critical inquiry. How has the college shaped, and been shaped by, the people and places of the surrounding region? What has JCC meant to the students who have come together here for 75 years and counting? Students will gain hands-on experience in a variety of research methodologies, including ethnographic fieldwork, oral history, rhetorical analysis, and the analysis of primary sources and data. The course will culminate with a creative project that documents the narratives of the people who comprise the JCC story. Prerequisite/Corequisite: ENG 1530, Prerequisite: Completion of one social science course or permission of instructor. J, spring. Institutional Course Syllabus
