Building Automation Systems

BAS through Workforce Development

This 24-week, 140-hour hands-on program consists of two 70-hour modules. Students will learn to install, repair, and maintain computer-based control systems that control and monitor a building's mechanical and electrical equipment including heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), and energy management systems. Instruction will also include an overview of the growing field of BAS, specific pathways into employment, electrical safety, and hands-on skills needed to work in this field.

This program is ideal for individuals responsible for commercial or residential building maintenance, working in the HVAC or plumbing industry, electricians, or those interested in entering one of these professions. Additionally, JCC’s BAS program provides supplemental knowledge to the theories and skills offered in JCC’s HVAC Fundamentals program; however, completion of our HVAC program is not a requirement to enroll in BAS.

Module I: Electrical Foundations

This 12-week, 70-hour module focuses on theory and practical application of electrical concepts including AC/DC Circuits, Multimeters, Electrical Safety, Ohm’s Law, Wire Management, and Series/Parallel Circuits. Students will learn to draw, construct, and troubleshoot electrical circuits, relays, and switches.

  • North County Center: June 3-August 20 | Monday & Tuesday, 5:30-8:30 p.m.
  • Jamestown Campus: June 5-August 28 (no class on July 4) | Wednesday & Thursday, 5:30-8:30 p.m.

Module II: BAS Control Devices & Application

This 12-week, 70-hour module focuses on input and output types, classification of BAS devices and controllers, as well as device installation, programming, and startup structure. Hands-on learning activities include wiring BAS input/output types to terminal strips, wiring 4-20ma circuits, utilizing multimeters to check relay coils and continuity, and wiring a 0-10 volt DC output signal to a transducer device.

  • North County Center: August 27-November 19 (no class on Labor Day, Sept. 2) | Monday & Tuesday, 5:30-8:30 p.m.
  • Jamestown Campus: September 4-November 21 | Wednesday & Thursday, 5:30-8:30 p.m.

Financing your training
