FORT PIERCE, Fla. – Wednesday marked a monumental day for the Jamestown Community College women's swimming program, as sophomore Karianne Yuchnitz (Panama, N.Y./Panama Central) became the first national champion in program history after the first day of the NJCAA Swimming & Diving Championships.
In the preliminary round, Yuchnitz set a new school record in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 23.94, beating out Sydney Weatherspoon of Division I Indian Rivers State College by just over half a second. This was the third time Yuchnitz has set a new mark in the event, giving her the one seed going into the championship round.
In the championship round, Yuchnitz once again set a new school record in the 50 yard freestyle, posting a time of 23.87 beating out Weatherspoon who posted a time of 24.21.
Yuchnitz’ success is not a surprise: she has been named NJCAA Region 3 Player of the Week three times and was also a NJCAA Region 3 First Team All-Region in five events and Second Team All-Region in one event.
Yuchnitz and the rest of the Jayhawks will continue their competition at nationals throughout the week.
