”Out of Paper,” an exhibition that puts a creative spin on the many uses of paper, runs from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. weekdays Oct. 10 through Dec. 14 at SUNY Jamestown Community College in the Weeks Gallery on the Jamestown Campus. Five porous circles, created with straw-sized rolls of paper, combine to create a sculptural piece.

The free event is open to the public and features works from local, regional, national, and international artists. An opening reception will be held from 6:30-8 p.m. on Oct. 20.

“We have eight individual artists contributing works,” Colin Shaffer, managing director of galleries for JCC said. “Some use paper in ways you would expect — to print or to paint on, or make books — others explore its sculptural possibilities, or turn what is analog, digital.”

The exhibition is the first to be organized by a visiting curator. Debra Eck is an internationally exhibited, British mixed-media artist who lives and works locally. A SUNY Distinguished Adjunct, Eck has taught at JCC and SUNY Fredonia, and has conducted workshops in book arts across the United States and Europe. She is excited to present such a diverse selection of works that all begin with similar material.

“Paper is such a mundane thing, even in today’s digital world, it is still everywhere,” Eck shared. “It’s fascinating how each artist takes as simple a medium as paper and transforms it into something unique.”

Exhibiting artists are Wendy Bale of Jamestown; Sara Brown-Milspaw and Carrie Tredo, both of Westfield; Bob Collingon, Lisa Kissel Collingon, and Janna Willoughby-Lohr, all of Buffalo; Celia Price of Lockport; Jill Dawson of Westford, VT; and Julie Dodd of Wirral, U.K.
