More than 170 SUNY Jamestown Community College students gained valuable hands-on experience through internships during the fall 2025, spring 2026 and summer 2026 semesters, helping them connect classroom learning with real-world career opportunities.
Students completed internships with dozens of businesses, organizations, health care providers, school districts and community agencies throughout western New York, northwestern Pennsylvania and beyond. Through these experiences, students applied knowledge from their academic programs, developed professional skills, expanded their networks, and explored potential career paths.
"Internships provide students with opportunities to learn outside the classroom while building confidence and career readiness," said Julie Page, JCC’s Career Services director. "These experiences help students understand what working in their chosen field is really like and often lead to valuable professional connections and employment opportunities."
Research consistently shows that employers place significant value on practical experience when hiring entry-level candidates and recent graduates.
At JCC, many academic programs incorporate required fieldwork, clinical placements, or internships as part of degree completion. These programs include Addictions Counseling, Administrative Professional, Community Health Worker, Criminal Justice, Direct Support Professional, Early Childhood Education, Health Information Technology, Human Services, Nursing, Occupational Therapy Assistant, and Tourism and Hospitality.
Students enrolled in programs that do not require an internship can often work with academic advisors and Career Services staff to pursue an elective internship for academic credit.
The internships coordinated through Career Services can take place on or off campus and may be completed in person, remotely, or through a hybrid format. Students can tailor the experience by selecting the number of credits they wish to earn, choosing a faculty mentor, and identifying learning goals that align with their academic and professional interests.
Many students are also able to pursue placements with employers of their choice when opportunities are available.
Students become eligible after completing at least 12 credit hours and one course in their area of interest.
“One advantage for JCC students is the ability to participate in internship experiences early in their college careers,” Page said. “Doing so can help them gain important career readiness skills and allow them time to confirm or, if needed, modify their career paths.”
In addition to traditional internships, JCC offers unique experiential learning opportunities through programs such as the Walt Disney World Resort Disney College Program and international internships in countries including Spain, Guatemala, and Sweden.
College officials said the success of the internship program depends on strong partnerships with employers and organizations willing to mentor students and provide meaningful learning experiences.
"We are grateful to the many employers and organizations that invest in our students," Page said. "These partnerships benefit students while also helping employers develop future talent pipelines for their workforce needs."
