According to Webster’s Third New International Dictionary, “warp” can be defined as a mental twist or distortion. With this in mind, SUNY Jamestown Community College will host Warp Trio, a musical trio of four members, for a two-day residency on April 5-6.

“Warp Trio is a fantastic group,” shares Neil Flory, JCC’s coordinator of Music and associate professor. “We could say the ‘warp’ comes in because you can’t categorize them because of their style. They do a variety of music from classical to jazz… progressive and their own pieces and interpretations of other people’s music. They’re not easily pigeonholed.”

The Columbia Free Times describes them as “a talented group that exemplifies the genre-obliterating direction of contemporary classical music.” The band members are a mix of Juilliard-trained, and some are steeped in rock and jazz styles. They perform a broad range of pieces from jazz to classical, mingled with their original compositions, and aim to include original compositions, works by living composers, and an element from traditional classic and/or jazz repertoire.

This residency is free and open to the public, and offered in-person and online. From 2:40-3:55 p.m. on April 5, The Warp Trio will be in room 148 of the Hultquist Library to discuss their experiences and approach to music. The first concert of the residency begins at noon on April 6 in the Student Union in the Hamilton Collegiate Center, and will feature a unique, electric set of pieces. A deeper dive into the group’s musical style begins at 2:40 p.m. via Zoom. The residency concludes at 7 p.m. that evening with an acoustic set performed in the Scharmann Theatre.

“The residency is sponsored by the Society and Human Expression Career Community, the College Program Committee, and the Katharine Jackson Carnahan Endowment for the Humanities,” Flory shares. “We’re thankful that their generous support affords us the ability to bring a rich variety of musical experiences to our community.”

Warp Trio is comprised of pianist Mikael Darmanie; violinist, violist, and composer Josh Henderson; cellist Ju Young Lee; and drummer, percussionist and composer Rick Martinez.
