Nearly 50 seniors from Falconer High School spent the morning at SUNY Jamestown Community College in the Sheldon Center to participate in Taste of Independence. The event is part of a program that provides opportunities for students to gain familiarity with life skills such as managing finances and applying and interviewing for jobs.

Representatives from Chautauqua Safety Village, Collaborative Children’s Solutions, and Southern Chautauqua Federal Credit Union offered mock interview sessions, tutorials on managing a checkbook and budgeting, and navigating unexpected life situations. The goal of the program is to help students develop independent living skills and build self confidence.

“This is an excellent program for students and we’re excited we were able to host this event,” said Katrina Leake, assistant director of Admissions for JCC. “We have strong community partnerships, and it’s exciting when we can use that to richen the resources available in our area.”
