It would take students at SUNY Jamestown Community College at least two hours to drive to visit the Corning Museum of Glass. A glimpse of the contemporary glass art and design found at the museum is coming this fall to the college.
The exhibition is free and open to the public. Viewing hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays on the Jamestown Campus, Sheldon Center Weeks Gallery, located on the second floor. An opening reception is planned for 6-8 p.m. on Oct. 5 in the gallery.
“This is the first time the Weeks Gallery has exhibited glass artists who have a strong connection to the nearby Corning Museum of Glass,” shared Colin Shaffer, managing director of Galleries for JCC. “Each artist on view was previously featured in the museum’s publication, “New Glass Review 42.”
Erika Diamond, a textile-focused artist, curator, and educator, curated the exhibition. Erika was introduced to the exhibiting artists as one of the jurors for the publication in which they were featured.
“This curatorial project is an extension of that process of discovery, and is a way to further connect the JCC community to the resources of the glass museum,” Diamond said. “The exhibition features a breadth of techniques and perspectives in the ever-expanding field of glass.”
“Reiterations in Glass” highlights the work of Percy Echols and Dan Mirer, whose pieces highlight certain aspects of the studio process like the interconnectivity of breath and glass blowing; Siena Hancock who endeavors toward ethical practices in glass; Eriko Kobayshi who melds a minimal aesthetic with maximalist desires in her cast cubes; and David Schnuckel and Anjali Srinivasan who reference the way the body moves in their reflections on the potential for softness through breakage or heat.
