Advising for New Students

Get ready for your first semester

  • Attend a virtual Get Connected session to ask questions, get help with the advisement process and learn about your next steps!

Begin getting familiar with your student information, major requirements and course selection by following these steps. Do your best to prepare a draft plan, but don't worry if there are things you don't understand. Your advisor can help you with your plan and answer any questions you may have.

  1. Log into Self Service Banner through MyJCC and go to your Student Records. View Placement Information to find your initial course placement for English and math. View Your Advisement Transcript to access your previously earned JCC credits, including any transferred coursework.
  2. View your program requirements and sample first semester in your specific program (scroll down on the page to view the semester layout).
  3. Create a possible list of classes, using the English and math courses suggested in your placement information, along with other courses from your program’s semester map.
  4. Find your classes in the credit course schedule. You can view the semester schedule on the JCC website or Browse Classes in Self-Service Banner.
  5. Write down the times, days, and CRNs (course reference numbers) for each class so that they do not overlap with one another. This may take some time, and you may have to make a few edits as you draft your schedule to make sure everything fits together.  Your draft schedule may not be perfect the first time around - but do your best!
  6. Keep your transfer plans in mind when drafting a schedule. Information on transfer planning can be found on the Transfer From JCC page.

New student registration begins Monday, April 15. Accepted fall 2024 students will receive more information and details in early April.
