Program Overview

JCC’s media arts degree program is intended for students interested in using digital media to communicate with others by creating visuals and sounds, as well as using the written and spoken word. The program prepares graduates for careers as media specialists, educators, and designers with skills in web design, digital filmmaking, photography and digital imaging, multimedia journalism, and electronic storytelling.

JCC’s media arts curriculum is designed for students transferring to four-year institutions to pursue further study in media and/or multimedia production. The program also serves the needs of students seeking entry level employment in those areas, or for currently employed students who wish to upgrade their skills and continue their education.

As a media arts student, you will take introductory and advanced studio production courses such as digital photography, computer art and design, digital video production, web design, animation, and writing for electronic media. Which studio courses you take are determined by the direction you ultimately wish to pursue and are selected after careful consultation with your academic advisor.

Because the field of media arts demands an understanding of how and why people communicate, media arts students will also take a survey course in communication, a basic public speaking course, a course that introduces students to the fundamental codes of mediated communication and a mass communication and media literacy course in addition to their production courses. These communication courses provide the conceptual content that lay the foundation for effective media design.
