Legally Blonde: The Musical Opens

Legally Blonde: The Musical, the fall production of the JCC Uncommoners, opens at 8 p.m. on November 2 in JCC’s Scharmann Theatre.

Tickets, which can be obtained through JCC's box office, are available for 8 p.m. performances on November 3, 9-10, and 15-17. Matinee performances will be staged at 2 p.m. on November 4 and 11. Presale ticket prices are $16, general admission, $14, area students and senior citizens, and $8, JCC Faculty Student Association members. At the door prices are $18, general admission, $16, area students and senior citizens, and $10, FSA members. A portion of ticket sales will benefit the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer campaign. 

JCC, Buffalo State Finalize Agreement

JCC and Buffalo State College have finalized an agreement on the transfer of credits for several programs.

The agreement includes 53 specific JCC-Buffalo State program-to-program articulations. New articulation agreements outline the transfer of credits from JCC’s A.S. Biotechnology and A.S. Environmental Studies to Buffalo State’s biology degree, JCC’s A.S. Environmental Studies to Buffalo State’s earth science degree, JCC’s A.S. Liberal Arts and Sciences: Math & Science to Buffalo State’s forensic chemistry degree, and JCC’s A.S. Liberal Arts and Sciences: Math & Science to Buffalo State’s physics education (7-12) degree.

Manufacturing Field Explored During IPOD

An array of manufacturing processes and products were on display for students from JCC and area high schools during the Industrial Possibilities and Opportunities Day (IPOD) on October 26.

Sponsored by the Manufacturers Association of the Southern Tier, the Chautauqua County Chamber of Commerce, and JCC, the event was part of the "Dream It! Do It!" initiative, a campaign conceived by the National Association of Manufacturers to help modern manufacturers attract employees with the right mix of skills and education.

“Thirty area manufacturers set up displays and shared information to help students understand that not only are there diverse jobs available in manufacturing, those jobs pay well,” said Dave Johnson, director of industrial services for the Chamber and MAST.

Men's Health Night Planned

George Carlo, performance coach for the Detroit Tigers, will present “Secrets of Champions” during a men’s health night program at JCC’s Jamestown Campus from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. on November 12.

The program, sponsored by JCC’s campus health center, will be held in the Physical Education Complex and is open to male students as well as men from the community.

Dr. Carlo has served as a performance advisor in the University of Buffalo athletic department since 2010. A former member of the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences faculty, Dr. Carlo focuses his research on the science of nervous system and musculo-skeletal function during athletic performance.

Facility Renovation Will Benefit Media Arts Program

Students studying media arts at JCC’s Jamestown Campus will benefit from expansion and renovation of facilities through an estimated $750,000 project tentatively scheduled to be completed in spring 2014. Funding will be provided by the state construction fund, capital chargeback revenue, and JCC Foundation support.

Included in the college’s five-year capital master plan and recommended by program review panels for JCC’s media arts and communication programs, the project complements funds within the five-year, two million dollar federal Title III grant awarded to JCC in 2011, which will provide significant upgrades in equipment for JCC’s Associate in Science degree program in media arts.

Collaboration On Radiologic Technology Programs Announced

JCC and three healthcare programs in the region are collaborating to provide credentialing opportunities for students working to become radiologic technologists.

Through several new agreements, individuals can complete training as a radiologic technologist at Bradford Regional Medical Center School of Radiography, the St. James Mercy Hospital School of Radiological Science in Hornell, or the WCA Hospital School of Radiologic Technology over a period of two years and concurrently earn an Associate in Applied Science degree in individual studies at JCC.

Center Gallery Exhibition Opens November 2

An opening reception for “O Brother, Where Art Thou? Works by Mikel and Dan Wintermantel” will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on November 2 in Center Gallery on JCC's Cattaraugus County Campus in Olean.

The event, free and open to the public, is sponsored by JCC and the Cattaraugus County Arts Council. The exhibition is the first time the Wintermantel brothers have displayed individual works together. A selection of new collaborative paintings is also included in the show.

Mikel Wintermantel studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and locally with Cole Young. He is renowned for his luminous landscapes which are shown and collected internationally. He is a Copley Master in the Copley Society of Art.

Student Works Selected For SUNY Exhibition

Works created by five JCC students are included in the fall SUNY Student Art Exhibition. The juried exhibition is on display in SUNY Plaza in Albany until February 1.

Works by current JCC students Joe Rice of Ashville, Hye “Rosie” Lim of Seoul, South Korea, and Justin Pope of Gowanda and 2012 graduates Maddie Schlick and Kyla Hill, both of Jamestown, were chosen for the show.

The SUNY student art shows were inaugurated in 2002 to bring the work of SUNY’s talented student artists to a wider audience. The traditional areas of drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, ceramics, and sculpture are enhanced by the addition of digital imaging and mixed media installations.

 

Franklin, JCC Update Transfer Agreement

Franklin University's Community College Alliance (CCA), which has partnered with JCC to offer online courses, guarantees that students who earn an associate’s degree at JCC will be accepted with junior standing into any one of 30 degree programs offered by Franklin. 

The CCA is an online bachelor's degree completion program that combines on-campus classes at JCC with online classes through Franklin University. The agreement between the two colleges allows students to take courses concurrently and maintain eligibility for federal financial aid.

In a recently updated transfer articulation agreement, students can transfer up to 84 JCC credit hours toward requirements for a bachelor’s degree and take a minimum of 40 credit hours online with Franklin.

"See What I'm Saying" Will Be Shown

“See What I’m Saying,” a documentary about deaf entertainers, will be shown at 7 p.m. on October 20 on JCC’s Jamestown Campus.

The film, sponsored by JCC’s campus life program and the college program committee of JCC’s Faculty Student Association, will be shown in the Student Union in the Hamilton Collegiate Center. Admission is $3 and tickets are available at the door. Proceeds will benefit the Jamestown/Warren Deaf Club.

Directed and produced by Hilary Scarl, “See What I’m Saying” is an award-winning documentary that follows four well-known entertainers in the deaf community: a comic, a drummer, an actor, and a singer. The film explores how the four overcome personal obstacles and celebrate professional landmarks.

JCC, SUNY-ESF Agreement Includes New Programs

Students who plan to transfer from JCC to the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY-ESF) can now count among their ESF degree choices a new Associate of Applied Science degree in Environmental & Natural Resources Conservation and a new Bachelor of Science degree in Sustainable Energy Management.

Scharmann Theatre Online Tickets Available

Ticket purchases for events held in JCC’s Scharmann Theatre have become more convenient with a new online ticket system.

Presale tickets can be purchased online through JCC’s box office from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday. Online tickets for general admission can be purchased up to four hours before the start of an event.

A $1.50 service charge is applied to online ticket purchases. Although tickets can be printed at home, purchasers have the option of picking up the tickets at the theatre will call window one hour prior to the event or having them mailed for an additional $2 shipping and handling fee.

Tickets at the senior citizen, area student, or JCC Faculty Student Association rates must be either reserved by calling the box office, 716.338.1187, or purchased in person at the box office.

LGBTIQQA History Month Events Slated

Interweave, the gay/straight alliance student club on JCC’s Jamestown Campus, will celebrate LGBTIQQA History Month with films on October 17 and 25. The events, free and open to the public, are cosponsored by the college program committee of JCC’s Faculty Student Association and the Katharine Jackson Carnahan Endowment for the Humanities.

Walter Meyer, author of Rounding Third, will introduce the documentary, “Bullied,” at 7 p.m. on October 17 in the Student Union in Hamilton Collegiate Center. A question and answer session will be held after the film

Author of One White Face Visits October 17

Hilary Corna, author of One White Face, will present “Create Your Own Opportunity and Embrace Your Potential: I Dare You” at noon on October 17 in the Carnahan Theatre on JCC’s Jamestown Campus. The program is free and open to the public.

One White Face recounts Ms. Corna’s experience working overseas shortly after college as senior executive officer and kaizen leader for Toyota in Singapore. Referred to as the “Gen Y version of Eat, Pray, Love,” her book has been featured in ForbesWoman and The New York Times.

Faculty Appointments, Promotions Announced

Several faculty appointments and promotions, effective with the start of the 2012-13 academic year, were announced recently:

New faculty    
Amanda Bartels, a mathematics instructor on the Cattaraugus County Campus, earned a master’s degree in education at SUNY Albany. She is a former adjunct instructor at Niagara County Community College, Erie Community College, and Niagara University.

Maryam El-Shall, assistant professor of English on the Jamestown Campus, holds a doctorate and a master’s degree in comparative literature from the University of California at Irvine as well as a master’s degree in English from the University of Florida. She taught previously at the University of Florida and the University of California at Irvine.

Explore JCC In October, November

JCC’s Jamestown Campus will hold Explore JCC, an open house for high school students and others, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on October 8.

A campus fair featuring information on academic programs and student services will be held from 10-11:30 a.m. in the Student Union. Participants can also choose among 20-minute sessions on internships, financial aid, JCC’s honors program, transferability of JCC credits, and options for undecided students. Guided campus tours will begin at 11:30.

Explore JCC will be held again on November 18 from 2 to 4:30 p.m. on the Jamestown Campus. A session at JCC’s Cattaraugus County Campus in Olean is offered from 10 a.m. to noon on November 10.

College & Career Night Set For October 16

JCC and the Chautauqua County Counselors Association will host the 36th annual College & Career Night on October 16 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Physical Education Complex on JCC’s Jamestown Campus.

The program offers high school students, their parents, and community members the opportunity to gather information about educational institutions and career possibilities. Representatives from nearly 60 colleges and 80 career areas are expected to attend the event.

JCC Foundation Will Hold Recognition Event

Three special honors will be presented during the JCC Foundation’s annual recognition event on October 25.

Patricia Phillips, a member of the JCC Foundation board of directors since 1999, will receive the John D. Hamilton Award. The Community Partner Award will be given to JCC’s regional sponsors which include the city of Jamestown, Cattaraugus County, and Chautauqua County. Paul Benke, who served as JCC’s president from 1981 to 1991, will be honored as president emeritus during the event.

The John D. Hamilton Award was established by the JCC Foundation in 1995 to recognize individuals whose contributions exemplify those of Hamilton, a past president and trustee emeritus of JCC.

August 2012 Graduates Announced

Fifty-nine students were awarded degrees or certificates from JCC in August 2012. One student earned highest honors (4.0 grade point average), nine students earned high honors (3.50 to 3.99 GPA), and nine earned honors (3.25 to 3.49 GPA).

JCC President Will Retire At Close Of 2012-13 Year

Gregory T. DeCinque, who is entering his 19th year as president of JCC, has announced his intention to retire following the close of the 2012-13 academic year. The announcement was made to faculty and staff at Dr. DeCinque's annual "welcome back" address.

Dr. DeCinque came to JCC in 1994 and is the longest-serving president in the history of the 62-year-old community college. According to Lance S. Spicer, chairman of the college's board of trustees, a formal search for Dr. DeCinque's successor will begin soon.

JCC Receives Nearly $900,000 For Biotechnology Research Training

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded JCC nearly $900,000 over the next three years to support biotechnology training for high school teachers and JCC students through HURI SURI, a collaborative program to provide undergraduate research opportunities for JCC and area high school students.

“Through this project, students at JCC will have exposure to biotechnology, a growing field with employment opportunities,” said Jose Herrera, program director at the National Science Foundation. “The project provides for connections with institutions in their state and region and opportunities to make a transition to a program at a four-year college.”

The cast of Legally Blonde: The Musical, the fall production of the JCC Uncommoners, will include JCC students Carl Brewer of Cassadaga, Amanda Wickmark of Fredonia, and Kari Ames, Hillary Belin, Amanda Campbell, Jennie Cross, Caitlin Cusimano, Breontai Gates, Karimah Rahman, Brian Swartzwelder, Thomas Tracy, and Eva VanRusso of Jamestown, and former JCC students: Caitlin Clark, Michael Correy, Michael Giambelluca, Daman Holland, Matt Warren, Teal Weatherley, and Remington Whitcomb.

The musical will also feature area community members Skip Anderson, Logan Norris Beard, Kristina Benson, Tyler DeJoe, Crin Fredrickson, Destiny Gates, Josh Hutchinson, Russell D. Lee, Nathan Meleen, and Lauren Scharf and JCC employees Don Hill and Lindsey Kaufman.

JCC Named Military Friendly School

Victory Media, a media entity for military personnel transitioning into civilian life, has named JCC to its Military Friendly Schools® list for the second consecutive year.

The list honors the top 15 percent of colleges, universities, and trade schools in the country that are doing the most to ensure the success of American military service members, veterans, and spouses as students.

Military Friendly Schools® features interactive tools and search functionality to help military students find the best school to suit their unique needs and preferences. The 1,739 institutions on this year’s list exhibit leading practices in the recruitment and retention of students with military experience and feature programs and policies for student support on campus, academic accreditation, credit policies, flexibility, and other services.

Weeks Gallery Will Present 'Sixties Cubed' Exhibition

The decade of the Sixties will be celebrated in art and music during the opening of Robert Hirsch’s exhibition, The Sixties Cubed: Signs, Symbols, and Celebrities, beginning at 6 p.m. on September 29 in JCC's Weeks Gallery.

Hirsch will discuss his cubed photomontages of celebrity and consumer icons from the 1960s beginning at 6:30. A 7:15 concert by Mercury Rising, a Buffalo-based classic rock band, will be followed at 8:30 with music by Family Function and the Sitar Jams during a reception featuring hors d’oeuvres and wine and beer tasting.

Achievement Coaching Efforts Begin

JCC students who are academically and culturally underprepared for college level coursework and/or a higher education environment can benefit from the services of achievement coaches.

As achievement coaches, Catherine Mulcahey and Alexander Sanders will work intensively with JCC students to enhance their college experiences through mentoring and advisement strategies. Ms. Mulcahey, based on the Cattaraugus County Campus, and Sanders, who is working on the Jamestown Campus, will identify best practices from their work to develop new approaches to advisement.

The achievement coach positions are funded through a two-year grant from the U.S. Department of Education’s Title III Strengthening Institutions Program (SIP). The Title III grant is also being used to strengthen student technology competencies and enhance access to higher education in the region.
