Chi Gung

What is Chi Gung? It’s a series of movements that align energy to free your metal and physical being. When you perform these movements, it frees one’s breath, opens the lymphatic system, and calms heart rate and blood pressure. Take this class where you’ll learn four Chi Gung movements that will give you a feeling of gratitude and appreciation for life as well as help let go of fear, guilt, and unworthiness.

Painting with Repurposed Pallet Wood

Take this introductory painting class where participants will prepare the surface of a repurposed pallet and paint a winter scene of white birch tree with bird and snowflakes. Approximate size: 12 inches wide by 24 inches tall. Individuals will be introduced to basecoating, highlighting, shading, and spattering. This beautiful art piece can be completed in one evening and is only slightly challenging. All supplies will be provided. This course is co-sponsored by Arthur R. Gren Co. Chakras

Seven major chakras power the electromagnetic energy systems of your human body. Each operates like an engine to keep your body operating smoothly. Pain and dysfunction may result from stagnation and blockage of your body's energy pathways. Learn the roles of your chakras, and how each affects you on mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual levels. Explore ways to practice exercises and mindfulness to keep your chakras well-maintained.

Coping Strategies for Empaths

Are you an Empath or do you have a friend or family member who is highly sensitive and intuitive? Many people are unaware that they are an empath and do not know how to cope with this ability. Feeling the emotions and physical sensations of others can be disconcerting, difficult, and sometimes painful. People with empathic abilities need to develop coping strategies to help them stay even-keeled. In this class, we will discuss survival skills for empaths and the instructor will share her personal techniques for coping with empathic abilities.

Tibetan Meditation

Deep meditation is the best form of meditation because it relaxes the body and releases energy of the mind. Take this unique class where individuals will be introduced to two different types of meditation based on Tibetan philosophy: movement meditation and visual meditation. Both types of meditation allow individuals to achieve full body meditation, a much deeper form of meditation than traditional practices. Benefits of meditation include: decreased mind chatter, increased circulation, and relaxes or harmonizes breath. Please dress in comfortable clothing.

Swedish Just For Fun (Introductory Level)

Have you always wanted to study Swedish culture and customs, and learn how to speak Swedish? Take this class where you’ll combine exploring Swedish culture with learning the basics of this language giving you the recipe for a great class! This is an introductory Swedish language course that will incorporate many aspects of Sweden such as its history, culture, customs, and contemporary society.

Beginning Tai Chi

This introductory class, which focuses on Yang Tai Chi, involves learning about the five elements which include breathing, movement, awareness exercises, meditation, and self-defense techniques. Additionally participants will learn movement styles which stretch and tone muscles. Tai Chi has widespread health benefits which include: stress reduction; increased balance, control, fitness and flexibility; a better focus; and higher energy levels. Over time, this class allows participants to gain the fundamental skills to move in to Tai Chi: The Next Level.

Tai Chi: The Next Level

Building upon the skills learned in the Beginning Tai Chi course, this class continues the Yang Tai Chi style which incorporates both slow movements and secondary forms with a faster pace. Additionally, it allows participants to gain a more in-depth understanding of how the body and mind work together to create balance and harmony. The benefits include a better outlook on life, better communication, better physical balance, and increased enlightenment and harmony. No class Nov. 27.

Traditional White Crane Kung Fu

White Crane Kung Fu is a Northern Chinese martial art which is practiced throughout the world. This class is based on a combination of physical fitness, stretching, and traditional martial arts movements. Kung Fu is considered a non-aggressive defensive art. Individuals taking this may see the following benefits: feel secure and safe from a martial arts perspective, better physical fitness, increased ability to stretch, and a better outlook on life.

Zumba™

Be a part of the fastest growing fitness program in the country and take Zumba™. It's exercise in disguise! Zumba™ is a Latin inspired, dance-fitness program that incorporates Latin and International music and dance movements, which create a dynamic, exciting, and effective fitness program. It gives participants a full-body workout, targeting areas such as gluteals, legs, arms, core, abdominals, and the most important muscle in the body - the heart. Come join the fun! Wear comfortable clothes and athletic footwear, and bring water to class.

Hatha Yoga

Take this introductory yoga class where participants will be taught a combination of physical postures, breath awareness, meditation, hands-on alignment, and deep relaxation. Additionally, get the benefits of aromatherapy throughout class. These sessions will give individuals the tools to practice yoga at home as well as give the foundational skills and knowledge to participate in any type of yoga class. Individuals will work at their own pace, following the instructor’s guidance. Please dress in comfortable clothing and bring a yoga mat or towel and water to class. No class Nov. 26.

Stress-Busting Yoga

Conclude your week by releasing pent up stress while experiencing gentle and restorative yoga. Learn deep relaxation through especially mild yoga poses and breathing practices. Participants will learn easy, gentle techniques that will enable them to calm mind and body. These classes are intended for those who want to let go of stress, and require no previous experience with yoga. Wear comfortable clothes, and bring a blanket and/or a mat to class. My Personal Yoga

This style of yoga adapts to you and to your individual needs. It is very gentle as it stretches and strengthens your entire body, allowing both mind and body to reach deep relaxation. The poses learned build strength, flexibility, and balance and the breathing techniques will increase lung capacity. No previous yoga experience is required, and anyone (regardless of physical condition) can take and benefit from this class. Wear comfortable clothes and bring a blanket and/or a mat to class.

Chair Yoga

This is a gentle form of yoga that allows students to experience the many benefits of yoga while using the chair for support. It is great for office workers, students, anyone who sits at a desk, those with limited mobility or injuries, seniors, as an addition to any exercise program, and anyone interested in trying yoga! Each class will begin by focusing on the breath then move into the poses while linking breath with movement and ending with meditation. Please dress in comfortable clothing and bring a yoga mat (no towels) and water to class.

The Art of Social Dancing: Beginning

Put some fun in your life – try dancing! Take this class where participants will learn general techniques and practical applications of dancing, as well as learn leading and following techniques. Class will feature two types of dance: a basic ballroom, slow tempo, dance such as the Foxtrot and medium tempo dances such as Swing, Jitterbug, Cha Cha, and Rumba. No dance experience necessary. To ensure that everyone has a dance partner, registrations must be in groups of two. Wear comfortable, snug fitting shoes with a smooth bottom. No class Oct. 27.

Transforming Muscles and Tendons for Radiant Health

Join this class for a weekly, gentle dynamic stretching and strengthening program designed to transform your flexibility, improve your posture, and erase tensions from your whole body. Done consistently, these exercises will improve your flexibility and may help you recover from injuries more quickly. All of the exercises in this class will be done standing, no equipment or mats are needed.

There's only one way to accomplish all of this....Let's pop some corks!!

Digital Photography Basics—A Guide to Taking Better Photos With Your Digital Camera

This is a fun and informative four-part series. In session one, you will learn the basic features about your camera. Session two covers memory cards, what pixels are and why they matter, and the difference between digital and film. In session 3, you will discuss framing, exposure, zooming, focusing, and more. Lastly, in session four, you will learn how to organize and store the photos you’ve taken. Participants are encouraged to bring their own cameras to each class and questions will be welcomed!

Learn how to make music on the spot using techniques of musical improvisation in this exciting hands-on workshop. Explore a variety of group improvisation activities! All musical instruments provided, and no previous musical experience is necessary.

Begin Playing Guitar

This class is designed for the adult student with little or no experience with the guitar. The course will cover tuning, chords, scales, chord progression, and culminates in learning a song as a group. Guitars are not provided—you must bring an acoustic or electric guitar to class.

DMV Points Insurance Reduction/5-Hour Prelicensing Course

Points/Insurance Reduction Courses/Traffic Survival

The Point/Insurance Reduction Program, offered through the National Traffic Safety Institute and approved by the Department of Motor Vehicles, offers participants a way to reduce driver record violation points and/or insurance premiums. Saturday and daytime classes include a 1/2 hour lunch on your own. Please bring your driver’s license to class. Note: Students must arrive at this class promptly by 9 a.m. or 6 p.m. If you are late, you will not be admitted. We strictly adhere to this policy. This applies to every JCC location.

5-Hour Pre-Licensing Course

This five-hour NYS Department of Motor Vehicles’ pre-licensing course is for students who are in the process of applying for their NYS motor vehicle license. You must bring your photo permit to class. SPECIAL NOTE: Please arrive by 4 p.m. for check-in and paperwork process.
