BIT recommendations address the behavior of the student and seek a response that balances the needs and circumstances of the student and the expectations and responsibilities of the college. There may be no formal “outcome” if the BIT believes the student is connected to appropriate services. Multiple outcomes may be decided upon to fit the needs of the student and the college community.
Outcomes are made as the result of a decision-making process that includes the asking of specific questions dealing with immediacy of threats, underlying mental illness, potential harm to self, and the ability and opportunity that a person being referred to the BIT has of placing the life of self or others in jeopardy. In addition, members of the BIT will evaluate the seriousness of the threat and the probability of the threat being completed as part of their recommendation. All reports will be given the same scrutiny as an extreme or serious threat.
All cases will be reviewed on an individual basis. Potential outcomes are not restricted to this list.
BIT may recommend the following (not in particular order):
After reviewing the situation, the BIT feels there is no need for any intervention based on the individual situation and/or the student’s needs have been met.
JCC Counseling and Career Center Referral
Student will be recommended to counseling. The student’s behavior suggests the possibility of a mental illness or demonstrates inappropriate coping skills. The Counseling and Career Center staff may deem additional referral is necessary.
Psychiatric Evaluation or Other Community Referral
Students whose behavior suggests a threat of harm to self or others may be transported to an appropriate facility for a psychiatric evaluation. This may be a voluntary visit or through arrest under the mental hygiene law. This may occur after consultation with a JCC counselor.
Withdrawal from JCC
Committee may recommend that that the student withdraw from JCC. To best address his or her needs, a student may decide to withdraw from the college without a plan to return. This student decision may include input from parents, academic department, or interested others.
This option involves a meeting with the student and the Vice President & Dean of Student Development, or a faculty/staff member who has consulted with the team. During the meeting, specific behavioral expectations will be identified along with the consequences in the event that the expectations are not met. Campus resources and/or off campus resources will be identified which may assist the student to meet the terms of the contract.
Faculty/Staff Follow Up
A contact will be made back to the faculty or staff member who brought the case or concern to the BIT. Purpose of this contact is to communicate to the faculty member the status of the recommendation of the BIT. The contact will be made by a member of the BIT or a BIT designee.
Contact can be made with a parent regarding inappropriate, disruptive or harmful behavior. Contact can be made by a BIT member, a BIT designee or the Vice President & Dean of Student Development or designee.
Student’s behavior that violates the Student Code of Conduct will be referred to the Vice President & Dean of Student Development for disciplinary action.
Campus Safety Referral
If student behavior endangers the campus, the police will be notified immediately.
