Students will explore multicultural literatures (novels, short stories, poems, and plays) that speak to issues of identity with regard to race, class, gender, sexual identity, ability, language, and so on. In doing this, students will further develop research skills while being introduced to critical reading approaches such as feminist, reader response, postmodern, and psychoanalytic criticism. This "Writing in the Discipline" course serves as both an introduction to literature as well as an opportunity to refine reading and writing skills developed in this composition sequence. Students will write to suit the methods, forms and standards required by the 21st century job market. They will compose documents designed to meet the needs of specific audiences and purposes: correspondence, proposals, a variety of short reports, outlines, instructions, and abstracts. Clarity, conciseness, and correctness will be emphasized, and assignments will give students experience in collaborative writing, document design, and selecting sources for integrity and reliability.
