Intro Early Childhood Ed/Care — 3277

Students will be introduced to the field of early childhood care and education. An overall view of the field includes history and theory; social, emotional, physical, cognitive, and creative development of young children; how early childhood professionals and early childhood programs meet the needs of young children and their families; and models of early childhood programs. This course introduces the activities and materials of the early childhood profession. Students will also complete 40 hours of fieldwork in a local childcare center. Students will be provided with information and experiences that will be helpful in deciding whether or not a career in education seems to be an appropriate choice. This course explores the philosophical and socio-cultural roots of education. Students will also examine the political, economic, legal, and ethical basis of American education. Contemporary issues facing education will be examined within the context of teachers, students, schools, and curriculum. Students will also complete a 40 hour internship in a local school. Students will increase their knowledge about the developmental needs and program requirements for infants and toddlers. They will do this by strengthening their observation skills, reading, and discussing current research and trends in infant/toddler care, and applying theory in field experiences. Students will plan and implement developmentally appropriate activities based on the needs of a specific child or groups of children within their field setting. Special attention will be given to the development of the whole child, the child as the curriculum, respectful and responsive relationships, intentional and purposeful interactions, and the environment as a teaching tool. Students are responsible for assigned readings and a weekly written log of the field experience in addition to other assignments.
