2014 alumna Mallory Rivas is the founder of Strike-A-Pose Photography located in Salamanca, NY. Strike-A-Pose Photography provides photography services both outdoors and inside the studio for individuals, weddings, parties, and more. The company specializes in family pictures, including children and newborns.

Mallory sets her business apart from others in the area by offering a hands-on unique experience to all of her customers. Strike-A-Pose Photography features Special Edits collages with Native enhancements.

She recalls her classes in entrepreneurship and accounting while at JCC. "Entrepreneurship helped me make my business plan, which really helped me see the 'bigger picture' of what my goals and expectations of my business are. Accounting helped me learn how to use Excel (and other programs) to better utilize tools to grow my business. Although accounting is definitely not the easiest or my highest scoring class, I appreciate the content I have learned and I can put it to use in my business."

JCC's network also gave Mallory the opportunity to aim high. "Having access to other entrepreneurs in the area really opened my eyes to what my business could become. It was great to see that they were not content either; they were looking for ways to grow or improve their businesses. This helped me believe that I can 'dream big' and open a bigger location in the future."

Mallory's advice for a new entrepreneur? "I would tell a new entrepreneur to simply stick to it. There are incredible highs and low lows in running your own business, and it’s not always rainbows and butterflies. Too many times I have wanted to throw in the towel because it seemed just too hard, but my customers have kept me going. Having reassurances from them makes me want to do what I do and keep my fire burning. Although I may be a new business owner, I feel that with my education I am better prepared to operate and run a successful business."
