The Huffington Post identified communication as one of the fastest growing majors for today's college students, and it's an increasingly attractive one for employers as well. In our increasingly digital world where you might interact with people in a dozen different ways before lunchtime, it has never been more crucial for students to be able to communicate effectively using a variety of formats.

The communication program at JCC emphasizes strategic communication and media message production. Students learn the foundational principles of communication including media writing, public speaking, interpersonal, and mass communication. Students can also take elective courses in video production, social media management, public relations, television studio production, and business communication. Internships are widely available to JCC students and offer professional experience in a variety of positions within the communication field.

The communication industry is extremely broad and this program is intended for students who wish to transfer to four-year institutions to pursue further study in strategic communication, digital media, public relations, broadcast journalism, and many other branches of communication. This program can also serve the needs of students seeking entry level employment in those areas or of students who are currently employed in those areas who wish to continue their education and upgrade their skills.

Program Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the program, students will be able to:

  1. Distinguish between effective communication and ineffective communication.
  2. Demonstrate understanding of basic and more complex theories of communication.
  3. Analyze ineffective communication, identify communication problems, and suggest solutions to those communication problems.
  4. Conduct an audience analysis to determine demographic and psychographic variables.
  5. Demonstrate the ability to perform basic research and organize their findings into a coherent, original written, oral or media presentation.
