Jamestown Community College proudly welcomes students from throughout the world to strengthen their English language skills with our English as a Second Language (ESL) program. Students may choose single semester or full academic year options. These courses are intended for students with a greater level of proficiency in a language other than English.
|ELI 0500||3 credits||English Language - Composition I||Students will learn sentence structure, paragraph organization and vocabulary development. They will also explore pre-writing skills including brainstorming and developing supporting details, and be introduced to essay writing with topic sentences.|
|ELI 0600||3 credits||English Language - Reading I||Students will develop skills to include scanning, skimming, and clustering techniques. Skills in identifying topics, main ideas, supporting ideas, and making basic inferences will be developed. Coursework will include building passive and active vocabulary, introduction of word families, distinguishing fact and opinion, understanding vocabulary from context clues, decoding skills, and recognizing transitions.|
|ELI 0700||3 credits||English Language - Speaking and Listening I||Students will improve vocabulary building, pronunciation, and intonation. Based on student level, development of accuracy and fluency in listening and speaking skills including correct word order in spoken English and life skills vocabulary will be addressed. Students will also gain assistance in building aural and oral communication skills and will focus on note taking and dictation. Academic vocabulary and an introduction to simple gerunds and infinitives will be targeted. A requirement of two hours of lab work each week outside of class time will be arranged individually.|
|ELI 0550||3 credits||English Language - Composition II||Students will continue working with simple and complex sentences and guided paragraphs and will build on essay writing skills. Expository writing and a targeted composing process will be further developed along with academic vocabulary. Pre-writing skills including brainstorming and developing supporting details will be strengthened.|
|ELI 0650||3 credits||English Language - Reading II||This course continues to build students' reading strategies of scanning, skimming, and clustering techniques. Identifying topics, main ideas, support-ing ideas, and making basic inferences are expanded upon. Based on student level, the course will continue the development of accuracy and fluency in listening and speaking skills including correct word order in spoken English, and will further develop life skills vocabulary. Students will continue to build aural and oral communications skills and focus on note taking and dictation. This course will also target academic vocabulary.|
|ELI 7008||3 credits||Exploring Systems in the United States||Students will learn about a variety of the systems in the United States including, but not limited to, various health, educational research, communication interaction, government, and financial systems particular to the cultures of the United States. This knowledge will enhance students' abilities to navigate many different areas during their educational experiences and aid in preparing them for higher-level academic study.|
