From 1975 to 1979, Militello played baritone sax and flute with Maynard Ferguson, receiving critical acclaim throughout the U.S. and Canada. He began performing with the Dave Brubeck Quartet in 1983.

After moving back to Buffalo in 1991, Militello was a contract player for the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra where he began playing for Doc Severinsen. He performed tenor, clarinet, and flute for Severinsen in the Tonight Show Band for two years.
