Jamestown Community College was informed that a laptop computer containing private identifiable information associated with the college was stolen. The laptop was owned by a consultant from SunGard, a Pennsylvania-based company that provides the records system used at JCC and more than 1600 other colleges and universities worldwide. SunGard believes that the laptop was stolen for its hardware value rather than the data and notes that the laptop was heavily password protected. The computer has not been recovered.
JCC student records on the laptop were associated with students who had interactions with the college between 2001 and 2003 only.
JCC has sent personalized letters to impacted students encouraging them to monitor their credit and financial account activity for evidence of unauthorized use or access. We are working closely with the State University of New York as JCC is among 13 SUNY campuses impacted by the theft along with other colleges and universities.
Individuals who would like to know more about identity theft protection are encouraged to visit www.idtheftcenter.org. SunGard has set up a website at www.sungardhe.com/laptoptheft and a hotline at 866.520.2408 to help answer any questions. SunGard will also offer impacted students a full year of free credit monitoring service through TripleAlert.
If you believe you may be impacted, you may wish to monitor your credit and financial account activity for evidence of unauthorized use or access. At a minimum, this should include placing "Fraud Alerts" on your credit reports and reviewing those reports carefully for any activity that you did not initiate. Fraud alerts can help prevent an identity thief from opening accounts in your name and placing a fraud alert entitles you to free copies of your credit reports. The consumer reporting companies have toll-free numbers for implementing fraud alerts (you only need to call one):
Equifax: 1-800-525-6285
Experian: 1-888-EXPERIAN (397-3742)
TransUnion: 1-800-680-7289
