The JCC Uncommoners will hold auditions from 7 to 9 p.m. on December 2 and 3 for Of Mice and Men. The open casting call will be held in Scharmann Theatre on JCC’s Jamestown Campus.
Of Mice and Men will be performed on March 12, 13, 14, 18, 19, and 20.
Male actors for the two lead roles, the boss, and several ranch hands are needed. The play also includes a role for one female. A well-behaved, older dog is needed for the show as well. For further information concerning the auditions, contact JCC theatre director Robert Schlick at 716.338.1153.
Of Mice and Men a drama, based on John Steinbeck’s novella of the same name, tells the tragic story of displaced migrant ranch workers, George Milton and his friend Lennie Small, who are drifters looking for work in California during the Great Depression.
The two have delusions of living off the “fat of the land,” and have arrived at a ranch to work for enough money to buy their own place. Lennie is a man-child, a boy in the body of a dangerously powerful man. Lennie’s obsession with things soft and cuddly has made George cautious about with whom he associates.
George promises to allow Lennie to “tend the rabbits” on their future land to keep Lennie calm. But when the promiscuous wife of the ranch boss is found dead in the barn with a broken neck, it’s obvious that Lennie accidentally killed her. George, now worried about his own safety, knows exactly where Lennie has gone to hide, and he meets him there. George is faced with a moral question: How should he deal with Lennie before the ranchers find him and take matters into their own hands?
Rehearsals begin in January, and will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday. A copy of the script is on reserve at the front desk of Hultquist Library at JCC.
Individuals interested in helping to construct the set, and/or work backstage should contact theatre technical director, Steven Gustafson, at 716.338.1166.
