JCC is dedicated to ensuring the health and safety of students, faculty, and staff, particularly in its efforts to limit the transmission of the H1N1 virus on campus.
The spread of H1N1 and other influenza-like illnesses can be prevented by following recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):
- Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing or use alcohol-based hand cleaners.
- Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. If you don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your elbow or shoulder, not into your hands.
- To reduce the spread of germs, avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.
- If you are sick, stay at home and avoid close contact with others.
- Contact your health care provider about vaccinations for seasonal flu and/or 2009 H1N1 flu.
- If you live together with other students, you should frequently clean commonly used surfaces such as doorknobs, refrigerator handles, remote controls, computer keyboards, countertops, faucet handles, and bathroom areas.
JCC students who think they may have the H1N1 influenza should call a JCC campus health center: Jamestown Campus (716.338.1013) or Cattaraugus County Campus (716.376.7569.
Symptoms of H1N1 and other influenza-like illness include:
- Fever (higher than 100˚F)
- Cough and sore throat
- Runny or stuffy nose
- Headache and body aches
- Chills
- Fatigue
In addition, a number of H1N1 flu (swine) cases report diarrhea and/or vomiting.
