JCC, in collaboration with the Cattaraugus County Arts Council (CCAC), will celebrate the opening of the Beyond Shadow and Light photography exhibition in new gallery space at JCC’s Cattaraugus County Campus with a wine and cheese reception from 5 to 7 p.m. on September 25.
The new Weeks/Olean Gallery is located in on the second floor of JCC’s College Center. The reception is free and open to the public.
Jim Colby, gallery director, remarked, “JCC is pleased to present this gallery space and revolving exhibition series. New lights and flooring have transformed a simple room where art was displayed to an exhibition space that is fitting for the quality regional, national, and global artists who will be displayed.
“The JCC Foundation and assistant deans Jeanne Johnson and Roz Newton are commended for their efforts in renovating the space, and Colin Shaffer is specially thanked for his installation expertise and physical labors to make the gallery happen,” added Colby.
Colby also emphasized that the reception will celebrate three years of collaboration with Anne Conroy-Baiter and Kim Driscoll of the Cattaraugus County Arts Council.
Music will be provided by Cale Hawkins, Western New York Blues Society Muddy Award winner for best upcoming artist. In 2007, he won the Memphis Bound Blues Competition in Buffalo. This competition recognized him as the best solo blues musician in the region and designated him as the western New York representative to the 2008 International Blues Challenge.
The exhibition features the works of regional photographers Jeffrey McMullen and Richard A. Burke, Jr. who specialize in black and white photography. Works by both artists are included in the Weeks Gallery’s permanent art collection.
“Their work complements each other in simplicity of form, graphic nature, and contemplative subject matters,” notes Ms. Conroy-Baiter.
McMullen explains, “This exhibition is an extension of a project Richard and I worked on in 2007, photographing the interiors of the former Allegany County ‘Poorhouse’ (vacant for years) near Angelica and the Belmont Hotel.
“Richard returned to the Poorhouse to explore the spirits of former residents we sensed still occupied the building. Models in period costume within prop installations created his imaginative dramas. As he ventured inward, I moved outside to produce the North Coast series of landscapes along lakes Erie and Ontario which studied the place of architectural subjects in nature, but also the sense of quiet abandonment I had found in the building interiors.”
The exhibition also includes pieces from Jeff Curto’s The Italian Portfolio: Evidence of Hands on Stone and Arno Rafael Minkkinen’s Weightlessness series in the adjacent Hallway Gallery. Both artists are renowned for portraits within natural landscapes.
The exhibition is on display until December 10. Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday.
