Denise Burbey and Taylor Pancoast are recipients of the 2009 SUNY Chancellor's Awards for Excellence.
Faculty, librarians, and professional service employees within the SUNY system who received the SUNY Chancellor’s Award were honored with a certificate and cast bronze medallion. The awards are announced after a SUNY advisory committee reviews nominations from faculty, students, and colleagues throughout the 64-campus system.
Ms. Burbey, interim director of technology, received the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Professional Service. She joined JCC’s staff in 1997. After serving JCC’s Center for Continuing Education as a project manager and associate director, she became the director of distance learning in 2002.
Prior to moving to western New York, Ms. Burbey was the associate director of career-directed programs at Silver Lake College and had management responsibilities at radio stations in Wisconsin and Tennessee.
She earned an associate’s degree at Lakeshore Technical College, a bachelor’s degree at Silver Lake College, and a master’s degree at Buffalo State College. She is a member of the SUNY Learning Network advisory board of directors and the Directors of Online and Distance Learning Environments.
Dr. Pancoast, professor of chemistry, received the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. He received the JCC Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1985.
A member of JCC’s faculty from 1983 to 1996, Dr. Pancoast taught at the Oakwood Friends School in Poughkeepsie and the Calhoun School in New York City before returning to JCC in 2004. He also taught previously at the Rochester Institute of Technology and SUNY Fredonia.
Dr. Pancoast earned a bachelor’s degree at Haverford College and a doctorate at Michigan State University. He is a member and former chairperson of the Penn-York section of the American Chemical Society.
