Two Students Receive SUNY Chancellor’s Award

Heather Pfeiffer of Olean and Kenneth Long of Dunkirk were honored recently with the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence. The students are among 238 SUNY students recognized for their academic achievement, leadership, and community service.

The annual awards are given to students who earn a grade point average of 3.78 or higher and record a significant contribution to their campus or local community.

“A rigorous three-part process that begins at the campus and evaluates each student’s performance not only in the classroom, but also in the athletic arena, the art studio, and the community, is used to determine our winners,” said SUNY vice chancellor and officer-in-charge John J. O’Connor.

Ms. Pfeiffer, who was also named to the All-New York third academic team of the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) 2009 All-New York Academic Teams for community colleges, graduates this month with an Associate in Science degree in Liberal Arts & Sciences: Mathematics & Science.

A member of JCC’s Cattaraugus County Campus PTK chapter, Ms. Pfeiffer was co-captain of the women’s soccer team and coaches youth basketball and soccer. She has been named to the dean’s list each semester and served as a tutor in the college’s Learning Assistance and Computer Center.

Long, who has attended JCC’s Jamestown Campus as a part-time student, graduates with an Associate in Applied Science degree in nursing. Named to the dean’s list each semester, Long served as president of JCC’s Nursing Club. He participated in several community service projects and acted as a student advocate for nursing student concerns.
