A discussion, “Autism and Law Enforcement,” will be presented from 7 to 8:15 p.m. on March 24 in the Cutco Theater on JCC’s Cattaraugus County Campus. The event is free and open to the public.
The Community Reads Project of JCC, along with the JCC Cattaraugus Campus Program Committee, is sponsoring the event as a tie-in to The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon, the book selected for this year’s study.
Presenters Timothy Whitcomb, Cattaraugus County undersheriff and JCC criminal justice instructor, and Karen O'Dell, autism services specialist for Olean City Schools, will present an overview of Autism Spectrum Disorders. They will discuss how the needs and responses of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder can be reconciled with the duties of the police to protect and serve the community, and review critical autism issues for officers such as lack of fear or real danger, sensory over-stimulation, and wandering.
