Arbor Day Ceremony Held

To commemorate Arbor Day and the designation of JCC as a Tree Campus USA college, JCC held a special tree planting ceremony on April 29.

The event included the planting of Striped Maple, Black Tupelo, Katsura, Kwanzan Flowering Cherry, Redbud, Hackberry, Turkish Filbert, Perkins-Pink Yellow-wood, Heritage River Birch, Japanese Lilac, Korean Mountain Ash, Sassafras, and Bloodgood London Plane trees.

JCC honors students assisted with the tree planting. Several of the students are interns at Forecon, Inc., where they are working on an update of JCC’s tree management plan.

The Tree Campus USA designation, which was awarded by the Arbor Day Foundation to JCC in 2010, signifies a college’s dedication to campus forestry management and environmental stewardship. JCC was the first community college in New York to be named a Tree Campus USA college.

JCC Hosts E-Waste Recycling May 14

E-waste recycling will be conducted at JCC’s Jamestown Campus from 9 a.m. to noon on May 14.

Student Art Awards Announced

Works by 16 JCC students were honored with awards during the opening of the annual student art exhibition in the Weeks Gallery.

The exhibition featured 55 artists and presented 109 artworks selected from 247 submissions that include drawings, paintings, 2D and 3D design, sculpture, ceramic, mixed media, photography, digital media, and short documentary films.

The show was judged by JCC alumnus Nathan Naetzker who received a bachelor’s degree in painting from Buffalo State College and a master’s degree in fine arts in painting from the New York Academy of Art. He teaches at the University at Buffalo, Buffalo State College, Niagara County and Erie community colleges, and Buffalo Arts Studio.

Drs. Faulk, Ney Named To Board

Lillian V. Ney and Carole B. Faulk have been appointed to the JCC board of trustees.

Dr. Faulk, who served on JCC’s human services faculty from 1981 to 2003, earned a bachelor’s degree at Millersville University and master’s and doctoral degrees at the University of Pittsburgh.

During her tenure at JCC, Dr. Faulk served as chair of the social sciences and business division and coordinator of the human services program. She received JCC faculty awards for teaching and leadership and was a recipient of the State University of New York Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2000.

Dr. Faulk was instrumental in developing JCC’s human services program curricula as well as establishing relationships among JCC and SUNY Fredonia, and SUNY Buffalo to enhance academic opportunities in social work for area students.

Information Night Planned In Dunkirk

An information night will be held at JCC's North County Center on Bennett Rd. in Dunkirk from 5 to 7 p.m. on May 5.

Academic programs, credit and non-credit programs, financial aid and transfer opportunities, and student services will be outlined during the program. A tour of the center’s facilities will be conducted.

College 101 Set In Jamestown, Olean

High school juniors and their parents are encouraged to attend College 101, a special event sponsored at JCC’s Jamestown Campus on May 12 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. and at the Cattaraugus County Campus on May 24 from 6 to 8 p.m. The program begins with a session that encourages parents and students to work together in finding the “right fit” when exploring college options.

Spring Concerts May 10 And 12

JCC's choir, concert band, vocal jazz ensemble, and jazz ensemble will showcase a variety of music styles during a combined performance on May 10. The JCC rock ensembles perform on May 12.

Both concerts will be performed in JCC’s Scharmann Theatre. Admission to each concert is $4, general public; $3, area students and senior citizens; and $2, JCC Faculty Student Association members. Tickets can be purchased by calling the JCC box office, 716.338.1187, or at the theatre door prior to a performance.

The May 12 concert features the college choir, directed by Brian A. Bogey. Selections include “Seasons of Love” from the musical “Rent,” “Jenny Rebecca” by Hall, the spiritual “Every Time I Feel the Spirit” and excerpts from the “Solemn Mass” by Louis Vierne.

Student, Faculty Recitals Planned

JCC’s music students and faculty will present recitals in Scharmann Theatre on the Jamestown Campus. The programs are free and open to the public.

The student recital begins at 7 p.m. on April 28. Music will range from Monteverdi and Bach to Jimi Hendrix. Among those scheduled to perform are Dylan Edwards and Ashley Gardner, flute; Tim Vaughn, baritone; David Nicastro, guitar; Gabrielle Carr and Julie Hunsinger, soprano; Michael Staley, tenor; Megan Emory, piano; Alexander Peterson, euphonium; and Vinessa Hooten, saxophone. JCC adjunct music faculty member Cathleen Gagliano will be the accompanist.

RN Work Project Focus Of May 4 Program

A national study of new nurses focusing on career changes and work attitudes will be outlined during a May 4 program at JCC’s Jamestown Campus.

Carol Brewer, Ph.D., RN, FAAN, principal investigator for the RN Work Project, will present “The Nursing Workforce: Who Are We? Who Stays? Who Goes? What’s The Result?” at 7 p.m. on May 4 in Scharmann Theatre. The program is free and open to the public.

The RN Work Project, a study funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, was begun in 2006 to track career changes among new nurses. The 10-year project assesses the needs and challenges faced by new nurses who, evidence indicates, have the highest turnover rates.

Stage Set For One-Act Plays

The Theater and Culture Club at JCC’s Cattaraugus County Campus will perform two one-act plays in May.

The performances, free and open to the public, include “Clue” and “Your Basic Daytime Game Show” beginning at 7:30 p.m. on May 12 and 13 in the Student Union. A brief intermission between presentations will be held.

Both plays feature student performers and are directed by Anna Bush, club advisor.

Written by Mark Vecchio, “Clue” requires guests at Lord Body’s castle to play the popular board game to solve Mr. Body’s murder. In “Your Basic Daytime Game Show,” written by Kevin Days, Bert Sails hosts the hottest new game show that just might kill you.

Diversity Weekend April 29-30

JCC’s Cattaraugus County Campus program committee will sponsor several events as part of Olean’s Cultural Diversity Weekend.

The Seneca Youth Dancers will perform at 6:30 p.m. on April 29 in JCC’s Cutco Theater. The performance is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served in the Magnano Reception Room, adjacent to the theater, after the performance.

JCC’s Center for Continuing Education will host a series of free workshops focused on Native American arts and crafts on April 30. Sessions include: Seneca bead working, 10 a.m. to noon; lacrosse history, 10 to 11 a.m.; Seneca drumming, 11 a.m. to noon; and Seneca social dance workshop, noon to 1 p.m. Class sizes are limited and age restrictions may apply so early registration is encouraged.

Student Art Exhibition Opens April 21

JCC’s Weeks Gallery will host an opening reception for its annual student art exhibition at 6 p.m. on April 21 in the gallery.

The reception, featuring music by Amanda Barton and Charity Nuse, is free and open to the public. An awards ceremony begins at 7 p.m. in the Sarita Hopkins Weeks Reception Hall, during which artistic excellence awards will be presented.

The reception and exhibition are sponsored by the JCC Faculty Student Association, JCC Foundation, and JCC Alumni Association. The exhibition will be on display until May 6. Gallery hours are Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Thursday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Friday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Three Will Receive Alumni Award

The JCC Alumni Association on the Jamestown and Cattaraugus County campuses will present the 2011 Distinguished Alumnus Award during commencement ceremonies in May. The award recognizes graduates who have distinguished themselves in their careers and/or in service to their communities.

Dominic P. Rogers will be honored during the Cattaraugus County Campus commencement on May 20.

Rogers, the information technology director at Cutco Corporation, graduated from JCC in 1991 with an associate’s degree in computer science. He earned a bachelor’s degree at the University of Pittsburgh and is pursuing a master’s degree at St. Bonaventure University.

Coca-Cola Scholarship Recipient Announced

JCC sophomore Donald Pool has been named a Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team Gold Scholar.

Gold Scholars each receive a $1,500 stipend and a special medallion. All Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team Scholars were listed in USA TODAY.

Pool, a Jamestown resident who will graduate from JCC this spring with an Associate in Science: Human Services degree, is president of the PTK chapter on JCC’s Jamestown Campus. He has been active in the college’s Non-traditional Student Network and Sign Language Club.

Also active as a student mentor, Pool was named to the JCC dean’s list each semester and has volunteered for the Boy Scouts of America and American Red Cross.

Chancellor's Award Student Recipients Named

JCC students Carly Olds of Andover, Andrew Robertson of Jamestown, and Molly Woodfield of Lakewood were among 249 SUNY students honored recently with the State University of New York Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence for their academic achievement, leadership, and community service.

“These students have excelled academically and taken advantage of what SUNY has to offer in and outside the classroom,” said SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher. “They are proven leaders, athletes, artists, community servants, and much more. They represent the future of our state and are perfect examples of The Power of SUNY.”

Transfer Agreement Signed With UPB

JCC recently entered into a transfer articulation agreement with the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford to assist students who plan to transfer to various bachelor’s degree programs.

The programs include biology education, chemistry education, English education, environmental education, mathematics education, and social studies education for grades 7-12, and business, computer, and information technology education for grades K-12.

The agreement guarantees acceptance of JCC students who complete up to 75 transferable credits, achieve a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.6, meet UPB conduct standards, complete application and deposit requirements by May 1, and fulfill additional requirements for admission to the education program at UPB.

Students Explore Entrepreneurship

Nearly 100 area high school students explored entrepreneurship in a recent half-day program titled “Be the Boss!” at JCC.

Tom Filsinger, whose entrepreneurial endeavors include Filsinger Games and Dark Menace Productions, delivered the keynote presentation as he discussed turning your passions into business success. Jamestown area entrepreneur Gary Lynn discussed the importance and value of sharing business success with your community. Students also heard Adam Mook of Erie-based Logistics Plus discuss finding global opportunities for your business.

Scott Bradish of Snap Fitness, Tom Meyers of McDonald’s, and Vic Tarana of Tim Hortons participated in a panel discussion providing students with an inside look at franchise opportunities.

SunGard, University Business Magazine Honor JCC

JCC is one of 11 colleges and universities nationwide being recognized by University Business magazine’s ‘Models of Efficiency’ program.

JCC identified a solution to transition faculty contract processing from a paper-based system to a streamlined electronic system. The college’s existing system called for special contracts with faculty who taught extra courses.

JCC rolled out the new system in phases beginning in summer 2010 with the whole system converted to the paperless system by January of this year.

Forests Are Focus Of Earthfest

Forests will be the focus of JCC’s Earthfest, which will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 20 outside the Hamilton Collegiate Center on the Jamestown Campus.

The event, sponsored annually by JCC’s Earth Awareness Club and the college program committee of the JCC Faculty Student Association, is free and open to the public.

Earthfest will begin at 11 with a multimedia presentation by Deb Lanni, JCC professor of communication and media arts, on sustainability. Performances by local acoustic guitarist Matt Maloof are featured throughout Earthfest and Jeff Musial of Nickel City Reptiles and Exotics will present an animal show at noon.

Throughout the event, vendors and exhibitors will provide earth-friendly products and information.

A tree seedling adoption will be conducted by the Earth Awareness Club thanks to tree donations made by the Chautauqua County Soil and Water Conservation District.

Bobby Militello, Golando Big Band To Perform

Renowned musician Bobby Militello will perform with the Dave Golando Big Band during JCC’s annual Jazz Fest on April 23 in Scharmann Theatre on the Jamestown Campus.

Admission to the 8 p.m. concert is $5, general public; $3, senior citizens and area students; and $2, JCC Faculty Student Association members. Tickets are available in the JCC box office, 716.338.1187, or at the theatre door prior to the concert.

Ticket holders are invited to an open rehearsal, which begins at 5:30 p.m.

Since 1982 Militello has played alto saxophone and flute with the Dave Brubeck Quartet. He has recorded over 20 CDs, played with almost every major orchestra in the U.S., Canada, and Europe, and has appeared in international jazz festivals and on television and radio shows.

Scholarship Golf Tourney Slated May 25

Entries are being accepted for the 19th annual JCC Scholarship Classic Golf Tournament that will be held at Bartlett Country Club in Olean on May 25. Registration begins at noon with a shotgun start at 1 p.m.

The tournament is sponsored by the JCC Foundation and the Cattaraugus County Campus Athletic Department. All proceeds benefit the Cattaraugus County Campus athletics program.

Community Reads Events Planned

JCC’s Cattaraugus County Campus program committee has planned several events during April.

Bill Meiers will begin a three-day visit on April 4 as part of the semester-long Community Reads program. The program has promoted the reading of Love Medicine by Louise Erdrich and celebrated Native American cultures.

Meiers is an English and humanities instructor at Arcadia University and Lehigh University in Pennsylvania. His extensive teaching background, which includes designing and teaching Native American fiction courses at Arcadia, features a a specialization in Louise Erdrich’s novels.

Powers Announced As Graduation Speaker

Daniel A. Powers, vice president of worldwide sales and business development for Amazon.com, will deliver the 2011 commencement address at JCC’s Cattaraugus County Campus on May 20 and at the Jamestown Campus on May 21.

The May 20 ceremony begins at 7 p.m. in the Olean YMCA/JCC Physical Education Center on Wayne St. in Olean. The commencement program in Jamestown begins at 10 a.m. in the Physical Education Complex.

Powers, who graduated from JCC in 1984, earned a bachelor’s degree at the Rochester Institute of Technology and a master’s degree in business administration at the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.

Recognized as a technology pioneer, Powers has focused his career on advanced technologies, business strategy, and information technology infrastructures.

Gasland Will Be Shown April 14

JCC will host a screening of the Academy Award nominated film Gasland on April 14 beginning at 6:30 p.m.

The event, free and open to the public, will be held in the Student Union on JCC’s Jamestown Campus. Co-sponsors of the event are JCC’s sustainability committee and Earth Awareness Club, UB Green, the Niagara-Buffalo League of Women Voters, and the League of Women Voters of Chautauqua County. 

The film will be followed by a panel discussion featuring representatives from Protecting Our Water Rights, Frack Action Buffalo, Allegheny Defense Project, Universal Well Services, and the Independent Oil and Gas Association, moderated by Minda Rae Amiran of the League of Women Voters of Chautauqua County. 

Students Visit Lawmakers In Albany

Three JCC students met with state legislators in early March to garner support for the college as the State Assembly and Senate work through the 2011-12 state budget process.

Freshman Sharise Peacock and sophomores Robert Reed and Molly Woodfield, accompanied by JCC president Gregory T. DeCinque and vice president and dean of administration John Garfoot, travelled to Albany to meet with Assemblymen Joseph Giglio and Andy Goodell and Senator Cathy Young, legislative representatives for JCC service area.

Ms. Peacock, from Cuba, NY, is a member of the Residence Hall Council and the Phi Theta Kappa national honor chapter and is a student employee in JCC’s Jamestown Campus business office. She is majoring in fine arts and plans to transfer to either the State University of York at New Paltz or Pratt Institute and pursue a career in art therapy and college level art education.
