JCC, Three Others Receive $3.35 Million Grant

JCC, Finger Lakes Community College, Tompkins-Cortland Community College, and Delaware Technical and Community College have been awarded a $3.35 million grant from the National Science Foundation.

The funding comes from NSF’s Transforming Undergraduate Education in STEM (Science Technology, Engineering and Math) program, in which there are three levels of funding. The grant, which was awarded the highest level of funding, will support the expansion of undergraduate research opportunities at the four community colleges as well as the dissemination of undergraduate research nationwide to other community colleges.

Putnam County Spelling Bee Cast Announced

The cast of the JCC Uncommoners’ production of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee has been selected.

The comedy will be performed at 8 p.m. on November 11, 12, 18, and 19 in JCC’s Scharmann Theatre. A matinee performance will be given at 2 p.m. on November 13. Tickets can be purchased by calling JCC’s box office, 716.338.1187.

JCC students and area performers chosen for the production are Hillary Belin and Maddie Schlick of Jamestown, Daman Holland of Randolph, Amanda Wickmark, Michael Hawk, and Raleigh Hawk of Fredonia, Gabby Carr of Dunkirk, Michael Correy of Cassadaga, and Steve Wendell.

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, a musical comedy, focuses on a fictional spelling bee set in a geographically ambiguous Putnam Valley Middle School. Six quirky adolescents compete in the spelling bee, run by three equally quirky grownups.

Homegrown Excellence Exhibition Slated

Works by eight members of JCC’s art faculty are featured in the Homegrown Excellence II exhibition that opens October 3.

The Homegrown Excellence exhibition showcases over 42 artworks, including photography, sculpture, ceramics, mixed media, prints, and new media/digital works by Gary Deckard, Debra Eck, Peter Goergen, Theresa Heinz, Mark Kirsch, Marilyn Martin, Heather Miller, and Yu Kanazawa.

Ms. Eck, whose work has been exhibited regionally and internationally, teaches courses on two- and three-dimensional design and art history. She received the JCC President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching for adjunct faculty in 2010-2011. She earned an associate’s degree in fine arts: studio arts at JCC, a bachelor’s degree at the University of Buffalo, and a master’s degree at the University of Northumbria.

"Manya" Performances Scheduled

“Manya: A Living History of Marie Curie” will be presented by actress Susan Marie Frontczak at 7 p.m. on September 20 and September 21 at JCC's Cattaraugus County and Jamestown campuses.
 

JCC Designated Military Friendly School

G.I. Jobs, a magazine for military personnel transitioning into civilian life, has designated Jamestown Community College a military friendly school.

The 2012 Military Friendly Schools list honors the top 20 percent of colleges, universities, and trade schools that are doing the most to embrace America’s military service members and veterans as students.

The list of schools, as well as interactive tools and search functionality to assist military veterans with their school decisions, can be found at www.militaryfriendlyschools.com.

Faculty Appointments, Promotions Announced

Three JCC faculty members were promoted with the start of the 2011-12 academic year:

Theresa Baginski and Amber Kautzman were promoted to associate professor. Sarah Kelley was promoted to assistant professor.

Ms. Kelley joined JCC’s faculty in 2006 as a reading instructor on the Jamestown and Cattaraugus County campuses. She earned an associate’s degree at JCC, a bachelor’s degree at Keuka College, and a master’s degree at Mansfield University.

Ms. Baginski, who teaches Spanish, earned  bachelor’s degrees at Niagara University and master’s degrees at the University of Buffalo and U.S. Army War College. She began teaching at JCC as an adjunct in 1996 and as a full-time faculty member in 2002.

JCC's Workforce Development Programs Cited

JCC ranked third in a list of workforce development programs published in a recent issue of Buffalo Business First.

The annual ranking, based on the number of programs offered by area colleges and universities and the number of participants in those programs, listed 21 western New York institutions.

A total of 5,337 individuals from 71 regional public and private organizations in western New York and northwestern Pennsylvania participated in 398 contract training programs offered by JCC’s Center for Continuing Education during the 2009-10 academic year.

The programs – a mix of workforce development and customized job skills training courses – were provided through Jamestown and Cattaraugus County campuses and North County and Warren extension centers.

Spring 2011 Dean’s List Announced

Students named to the dean’s list for the spring 2011 semester at JCC's Jamestown and Cattaraugus County campuses earned at least a 3.50 average, equal to a B plus or better, in 12 or more semester hours of study. Named to the list were:

Warhol Print Of Marilyn Monroe Donated To JCC

An original Marilyn Monroe screenprint by Andy Warhol has been donated to JCC's Weeks Gallery by Ken and Lois Strickler.

The donation was made in honor of retired JCC English professor Robert Hagstrom, one of the primary forces for creating a gallery space at JCC. Mrs. Strickler, a fellow student of Warhol’s at the Carnegie Institute of Technology, worked with Hagstrom to establish a gallery for fine arts.

In 1968, the Stricklers invited Warhol and several friends to visit their home in Jamestown after he presented a lecture at JCC. Warhol reciprocated by inviting the Stricklers to visit his New York City studio, The Factory, where he presented the Marilyn screenprint to Mrs. Strickler. The print was signed “To Lois. XOXO. Andy.”

Student Trustee Begins Term On Board

Sharise Peacock of Cuba has begun serving her term as the student representative to the JCC board of trustees, a post to which she was elected during the spring.

Ms. Peacock is the daughter of Sheila Hartle-Peacock of Cuba and Larry Peacock of Wellsville. A graduate of Cuba-Rushford Central School, Ms. Peacock is majoring in fine arts at JCC. She has been a member of the residence hall council, sustainability committee, and Phi Theta Kappa.

Following graduation, Ms. Peacock intends to transfer to either the Pratt Institute or the State University of New York at Purchase.
 

JCC Night at the Ballpark Planned

JCC alumni, family, and friends are invited to JCC Night at the Ballpark with the Jamestown Jammers on September 2 at Russell E. Diethrick Jr. Park.
 

JCC Reaccredited By Middle States Commission

JCC has received what President Gregory T. DeCinque described as "an outstanding report" including numerous commendations from the commission charged with overseeing the quality of its instructional programs and operation.

"Educational accreditation is a quality assurance process by which colleges and universities are evaluated every ten years by an external body to determine if specified standards are being met," Dr. DeCinque explained. JCC's accrediting body is the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

In addition to having its accreditation reaffirmed, the report JCC received from the commission in late June noted that it had met all 14 standards. The Middle States review is a multi-year process involving the preparation and submission of an extensive self-study report and culminating in a visit from a team of evaluators. JCC's commission visit took place in April.

JCC, Chautauqua Golf Club To Host NJCAA Golf Tourney Again

JCC has won a fifth consecutive bid to host the National Junior College Athletic Association men’s Division 3 golf championships at Chautauqua Golf Club for another three years.

JCC has sponsored the 72-hole tournament with the JCC Faculty Student Association at Chautauqua since 2000.

“I am thrilled that the NJCAA championship events committee approved our proposal,” said Greg Fish, JCC FSA executive director and tournament director. “The fact that we will host it for another three years is a sign of continued confidence in the leadership of JCC and Chautauqua Golf Club to coordinate such a significant event.”

NJCAA Hall of Fame Inducts Greg Fish

The 2011 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III men’s golf championship, held in early June at the Chautauqua Golf Club, was highlighted by the induction of Greg Fish into the NJCAA Golf Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

Leadership Academy Program Held

Nearly 20 JCC faculty and staff members completed the first JCC Leadership Academy program recently.

In partnership with the Institute for Community College Development at Cornell University, JCC is participating in a program to develop and enhance the leadership skills of its employees.

Susan Bronstein, executive director of human resources and college-wide safety, and Grant Umberger, director of continuing education, administered the academy, which included completion of an individual skill inventory, intensive half-day workshops, and consultation with mentors who are leaders at JCC.

“We covered a range of topics that included communication, conflict resolution, managing change, and diversity,” Ms. Bronstein said. “This was an opportunity for participants to grow and develop their leadership skills which in turn benefits the college on multiple levels.”

Dawn Pierce Will Perform In Olean

JCC’s Faculty Student Association and college program committee will sponsor a performance by mezzo soprano and hometown artist Dawn Pierce at 2 p.m. on July 10 in the Cutco Theater on JCC’s Cattaraugus County Campus in Olean.

Ms. Pierce, a graduate of Portville Central School, will perform “My Native Land,” a program of beloved American music including folk and art songs, opera, spirituals, jazz, and musical theatre with Greek pianist Charis Dimaras. Proceeds from the concert will support a new FSA initiative to promote the arts and incorporate more community-wide cultural programs in the Olean area.

Admission is $10, general admission, and $5, senior citizens and students. Tickets can be purchased from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday at JCC’s campus store or by calling 716.376.7514 to reserve them at the box office.

Employee Achievements Recognized

Several individuals were recognized for their contributions and service to JCC during a recent annual staff luncheon.

The President’s Award for Excellence, presented by JCC president Gregory T. DeCinque, was given to Edward Cole, senior programmer/analyst, and Michael Goon, maintenance mechanic I. The award reflects the recipient’s self-improvement, efforts on behalf of JCC, and excellence in professional activities.

Dr. DeCinque announced that Goon also received the State University of New York Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Classified Service.

Gene Danielson, who retired on June 1, was recognized for 29 years of dedicated service as resident manager of JCC’s Sheldon House.

Student Athletes Honored

Several JCC student athletes have been recognized by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) for their achievements.

Students must achieve grade point average and athletic participation expectations to be recognized at regional and national levels.

Rabb, Weyant Receive Chancellor’s Award

JCC faculty members Gregory Rabb and Karen Weyant received the 2011 SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence.

Rabb received the award for excellence in teaching while Ms. Weyant was honored for excellence in scholarship and creative activities.

Faculty, librarians, and professional service employees who received the SUNY Chancellor’s Award were honored with a certificate and cast bronze medallion. The awards are announced after a SUNY advisory committee reviews nominations from faculty, students, and colleagues throughout the 64-campus system.

Rabb, associate professor of political science, has been a member of the JCC faculty since 1986. He earned a juris doctorate at the State University of New York at Buffalo, a master's degree at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and a bachelor's degree at Canisius College.

JCC Participates In Model EU Simulation

Seven JCC students participated in the annual SUNY Model European Union Simulation (SUNYMEU) held earlier in the spring at SUNY New Paltz.

The simulation is sponsored by the SUNY Institute for European Union Studies and Simulations (IEUSS) and the SUNY Center for Global Affairs. JCC is represented on the IEUSS board of directors by associate professor of political science Greg Rabb.

Portraying key governmental entities for Sweden were Zachary Ahlstrom of Lakewood, Douglas Nuhfer of Warren, PA, Olivia Wines of Mayville, Daniel Ganoung of Ceres, and Todd Parke of Olean. Nicholas Bianco of Franklinville represented Romania and Noah Westfall of Kennedy played the role of the international press corps.

NJCAA National Golf Tourney Begins June 6

For the 12th straight year, JCC will host the National Junior College Athletic Association Division 3 men’s golf championship at Chautauqua Golf Club June 6-10.

Practice rounds will be held on Monday with competition rounds scheduled Tuesday through Friday. Tee times are scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon. Team and individual score sheets will be posted. Several of the competitors are All-American and region medalists.

Playwriting, Theatre Seminar Offered

Native American actor Gary Farmer, who participated in JCC’s Native American Film Festival in March, will conduct a playwriting and theatre seminar at Infinity Visual and Performing Arts, Inc. June 6-10.

The seminar, open to anyone 16 years of age or older, will help participants to write and act in a short play, and will offer instruction in improvisation and acting techniques. Sessions meet from 6-9 p.m. at Infinity, 115 E. Third St., Jamestown.

Powers Addresses Graduates

Daniel Powers, a 1984 JCC alumnus, delivered the keynote address at JCC's 35th commencement at the Cattaraugus County Campus on May 20 and 61st commencement at the Jamestown Campus on May 21.

The ceremonies honored, collegewide, 625 spring 2011 graduates, 199 December 2010 graduates, and 63 summer 2010 graduates.
