Explore JCC In October, November

JCC’s Jamestown Campus will hold Explore JCC, an open house for high school students and others, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on October 8.

A campus fair featuring information on academic programs and student services will be held from 10-11:30 a.m. in the Student Union. Participants can also choose among 20-minute sessions on internships, financial aid, JCC’s honors program, transferability of JCC credits, and options for undecided students. Guided campus tours will begin at 11:30.

Explore JCC will be held again on November 18 from 2 to 4:30 p.m. on the Jamestown Campus. A session at JCC’s Cattaraugus County Campus in Olean is offered from 10 a.m. to noon on November 10.

College & Career Night Set For October 16

JCC and the Chautauqua County Counselors Association will host the 36th annual College & Career Night on October 16 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Physical Education Complex on JCC’s Jamestown Campus.

The program offers high school students, their parents, and community members the opportunity to gather information about educational institutions and career possibilities. Representatives from nearly 60 colleges and 80 career areas are expected to attend the event.

JCC Foundation Will Hold Recognition Event

Three special honors will be presented during the JCC Foundation’s annual recognition event on October 25.

Patricia Phillips, a member of the JCC Foundation board of directors since 1999, will receive the John D. Hamilton Award. The Community Partner Award will be given to JCC’s regional sponsors which include the city of Jamestown, Cattaraugus County, and Chautauqua County. Paul Benke, who served as JCC’s president from 1981 to 1991, will be honored as president emeritus during the event.

The John D. Hamilton Award was established by the JCC Foundation in 1995 to recognize individuals whose contributions exemplify those of Hamilton, a past president and trustee emeritus of JCC.

August 2012 Graduates Announced

Fifty-nine students were awarded degrees or certificates from JCC in August 2012. One student earned highest honors (4.0 grade point average), nine students earned high honors (3.50 to 3.99 GPA), and nine earned honors (3.25 to 3.49 GPA).

JCC President Will Retire At Close Of 2012-13 Year

Gregory T. DeCinque, who is entering his 19th year as president of JCC, has announced his intention to retire following the close of the 2012-13 academic year. The announcement was made to faculty and staff at Dr. DeCinque's annual "welcome back" address.

Dr. DeCinque came to JCC in 1994 and is the longest-serving president in the history of the 62-year-old community college. According to Lance S. Spicer, chairman of the college's board of trustees, a formal search for Dr. DeCinque's successor will begin soon.

JCC Receives Nearly $900,000 For Biotechnology Research Training

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded JCC nearly $900,000 over the next three years to support biotechnology training for high school teachers and JCC students through HURI SURI, a collaborative program to provide undergraduate research opportunities for JCC and area high school students.

“Through this project, students at JCC will have exposure to biotechnology, a growing field with employment opportunities,” said Jose Herrera, program director at the National Science Foundation. “The project provides for connections with institutions in their state and region and opportunities to make a transition to a program at a four-year college.”

Cast Announced For Legally Blonde: The Musical

The cast of Legally Blonde: The Musical, the fall production of the JCC Uncommoners, will include JCC students Carl Brewer of Cassadaga, Amanda Wickmark of Fredonia, and Kari Ames, Hillary Belin, Amanda Campbell, Jennie Cross, Caitlin Cusimano, Breontai Gates, Karimah Rahman, Brian Swartzwelder, Thomas Tracy, and Eva VanRusso of Jamestown, and former JCC students: Caitlin Clark, Michael Correy, Michael Giambelluca, Daman Holland, Matt Warren, Teal Weatherley, and Remington Whitcomb.

The musical will also feature area community members Skip Anderson, Logan Norris Beard, Kristina Benson, Tyler DeJoe, Crin Fredrickson, Destiny Gates, Josh Hutchinson, Russell D. Lee, Nathan Meleen, and Lauren Scharf and JCC employees Don Hill and Lindsey Kaufman.

JCC Named Military Friendly School

Victory Media, a media entity for military personnel transitioning into civilian life, has named JCC to its Military Friendly Schools® list for the second consecutive year.

The list honors the top 15 percent of colleges, universities, and trade schools in the country that are doing the most to ensure the success of American military service members, veterans, and spouses as students.

Military Friendly Schools® features interactive tools and search functionality to help military students find the best school to suit their unique needs and preferences. The 1,739 institutions on this year’s list exhibit leading practices in the recruitment and retention of students with military experience and feature programs and policies for student support on campus, academic accreditation, credit policies, flexibility, and other services.

Weeks Gallery Will Present 'Sixties Cubed' Exhibition

The decade of the Sixties will be celebrated in art and music during the opening of Robert Hirsch’s exhibition, The Sixties Cubed: Signs, Symbols, and Celebrities, beginning at 6 p.m. on September 29 in JCC's Weeks Gallery.

Hirsch will discuss his cubed photomontages of celebrity and consumer icons from the 1960s beginning at 6:30. A 7:15 concert by Mercury Rising, a Buffalo-based classic rock band, will be followed at 8:30 with music by Family Function and the Sitar Jams during a reception featuring hors d’oeuvres and wine and beer tasting.

Achievement Coaching Efforts Begin

JCC students who are academically and culturally underprepared for college level coursework and/or a higher education environment can benefit from the services of achievement coaches.

As achievement coaches, Catherine Mulcahey and Alexander Sanders will work intensively with JCC students to enhance their college experiences through mentoring and advisement strategies. Ms. Mulcahey, based on the Cattaraugus County Campus, and Sanders, who is working on the Jamestown Campus, will identify best practices from their work to develop new approaches to advisement.

The achievement coach positions are funded through a two-year grant from the U.S. Department of Education’s Title III Strengthening Institutions Program (SIP). The Title III grant is also being used to strengthen student technology competencies and enhance access to higher education in the region.

Student Trustee Begins Term

Cody DeLong has begun serving his term as the student representative to the JCC board of trustees, a post to which he was elected at the end of the spring semester.

DeLong, the son of Joette Casel and a 2011 Jamestown High School graduate, is majoring in media arts with a focus on writing and directing both short and feature length films. His short film, “Tomorrow Before Midnight,” won first place in the recent Insomniac Film Festival sponsored by the Arts Council for Chautauqua County.

Four Films Featured In “Endangered Earth” Series

A four-part “Endangered Earth” film series, sponsored by JCC’s office of sustainability, begins September 4. Free and open to the public, the films will be shown at 7 p.m. on Tuesdays in the Student Union on JCC’s Jamestown Campus. A guided discussion will be conducted at the conclusion of each film.

“Food, Inc.,” which will be shown September 4, examines corporate farming in the U.S., including the industrial production of meat, grains, and vegetables. The documentary, released in 2008, also explores the economic and legal power of major food companies, the use of petroleum-based chemicals, and the promotion of unhealthy food consumption habits.

New Coaches Announced

JCC’s athletics department has announced the appointment of new head coaches in three of its Jamestown Campus athletic programs.

George Sisson will be the women’s basketball coach. Dick Adams, the new coach of the baseball program, will be assisted by BJ Salerno. Robbie Waddington will coach the wrestling squad with assistance from Ryan Fralick.

Legally Blonde Final Auditions Set

Final auditions will be held on August 30 and 31 for JCC’s production of Legally Blonde: The Musical beginning at 7 p.m. in Scharmann Theatre. Performances will be held in November.

Anyone age 16 and up is welcome to audition. Those auditioning should memorize a song and bring sheet music for the accompanist. They should also wear loose-fitting clothing and be prepared to learn some dance moves. 

The production calls for a cast of 40 people. According to director Robert Schlick, males ages 16 to 60 as well as male and female dancers, singers, acrobats, and gymnasts are needed.

College Access Challenge Grant Presents New Opportunities

Students attending five area high schools will have access to a variety of special opportunities during the 2012-13 academic year through a $250,000 grant recently awarded to JCC.

Partnering with JCC on a College Access Challenge Grant are Brocton Central School, Dunkirk High School, Jamestown High School, Olean High School, and Salamanca Central School. Students attending the Gustavus Adolphus Learning Center in Jamestown will also be able to access CACG program services.

The grant is funded through a $7 million CACG award received by New York state from the U.S. Department of Education. New York's CACG program is administered by the New York State Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC), the state's financial aid agency.

New Equipment Enhances Engineering, Technology Programs

JCC’s engineering science and technology degree programs will benefit substantially from the addition of two key pieces of testing equipment.

A universal tester and a fluid power testing system, obtained through a U.S. Department of Education Title III Strengthening Institutions Program (SIP) grant, enable students to develop a comprehensive understanding of material/fluid properties and replace equipment that was prone to frequent repairs.

Familiarity with the equipment is considered integral to students who, when hired by industries or who transfer into mechanical, civil, structural, and architectural engineering programs at four-year institutions, will need to know how to conduct and learn from product testing.

Industrial Maintenance Certificate Approval Sought

JCC's board of trustees has authorized college officials to move forward with a proposed new credit certificate program in industrial maintenance technology. The proposal, which has already been reviewed by the college’s faculty, now moves on to both the State University of New York and the New York State Education Department for the next stages of approval.

JCC's Athletics Program Restructured

Keith Martin has been named JCC's new athletic director.

Under a revised program structure, Martin will have oversight of athletic programming on both the Jamestown and Cattaraugus County campuses. Ben Lindquist will serve as the assistant director of JCC athletics and will also assume responsibilities on both campuses. Bill Burk, former athletic director on the Jamestown Campus, will now provide full-time leadership for JCC’s Total Fitness program in Jamestown.

“We are very pleased with the expertise and depth of experience brought to JCC athletics by the leadership of Mr. Martin and Mr. Lindquist,” said Eileen Goodling, vice president and dean of student development. “Both are former JCC athletes and are dedicated to bringing the best possible experience to new generations of JCC student athletes.”

College Access Academy Encourages Success

High school students from Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties completed a recent three-day, residential College Access Academy on JCC’s Jamestown Campus.

Made possible through a College Access Challenge Grant administered by the Higher Education Services Corporation, the academy was designed to encourage continued success in high school and develop readiness for success in college and beyond.

Chappale Burton, a Jamestown native who is a published author and motivational speaker, was the academy's featured presenter. Sessions included college life, values, strengths, and weaknesses, goal setting, motivation, self-leadership, effective communication, how to study, organization and time management, creative thinking, problem solving, conflict resolution, memory improvement, concentration and focus, asking better questions, test-taking skills, professors as resources, and the importance of relationships.

JCC Employees of Year Honored

JCC celebrated National Student Employment Week by honoring several student employees during a recent luncheon. The students were nominated for their reliability, quality and quantity of work, initiative, professional attitude, interpersonal skills, and unique contributions to the department in which they worked.

Named as student employees of the year were Kaitlyn Sexton of Olean and Joe Popielarz of Jamestown. Ms. Sexton, a student at the Cattaraugus County Campus, worked in the Learning Assistance Center. Popielarz worked as a student assistant in the media services department on the Jamestown Campus. The other nominee for the Cattaraugus County Campus was Chelsea Lewis of Bolivar.

Student Athletes Receive NJCAA Honors

Several student athletes at JCC’s Jamestown and Cattaraugus County campuses were recognized recently by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) for their achievements.

Students must achieve grade point average and athletic participation expectations to be recognized at regional and national levels.

JCC’s women’s basketball team earned an NJCAA Academic All American team distinction with a cumulative 3.40 grade point average (GPA). Members of the women’s swimming and diving team earned the 2011-2012 Academic Team of the Year award for its achievement of a cumulative 3.57 GPA.

Third Residence Hall To Open

Hillside Suites Central, the third residence hall to be constructed on JCC’s Jamestown Campus, will be ready for occupancy at the start of the fall semester in late August, according to a report John Garfoot, the college’s vice president/dean of administration, shared with JCC’s board of trustees recently.

The new hall, which can accommodate 120 students, is located between Hillside Suites North and South on the Curtis Street side of the campus. Like the previous two halls which opened in 2008, the new facility offers suite-style accommodations with private bedrooms and shared living room, kitchen, and dining spaces in each suite.

College Connections Students Of The Year Named

High school students throughout southwestern New York were recognized as students of the year in JCC's College Connections program at the close of the 2011-2012 academic year.

JCC honored the students, who were chosen by their schools, during a special reception in June. In selecting the students of the year, schools were asked to consider College Connections participants who had embraced the challenges of completing college level work while in high school and demonstrated resourcefulness, integrity, and dedication.

College Connections, JCC’s concurrent enrollment program with regional high schools, is accredited by the National Alliance of Concurrent Enrollment Partnerships. JCC partners with over 40 high schools and BOCES centers within JCC’s service area to offer nearly 60 different college courses.

May 2012 Graduates Announced

A total of 572 students earned degrees and certificates during JCC's May 2012 graduation. Seven students earned two degrees, and seven students earned a degree and a certificate. Fourteen students graduated with highest honors, representing a 4.0 grade point average.
