Sustainability Conference At JCC April 7

Sustainability: Benefits & Best Practices, a conference spotlighting initiatives and measures that can be implemented throughout the area, will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on April 7 at JCC’s Jamestown Campus.

Sustainable practices that are relevant for local business, industry, municipalities, non-profits, small business, educational institutions, and manufacturing will be outlined throughout the program.

The conference, sponsored by JCC’s Center for Continuing Education, begins at 8:30 a.m. with registration and refreshments. Following remarks by JCC President Gregory T. DeCinque, Chautauqua County Executive Gregory Edwards will provide details on a new initiative for county businesses and residents.

Faculty Development Day Focuses on Sustainability

“Seeking Sustainability: A Culture of Community, Compassion, Connection, and Choice” was the theme of the spring semester college-wide faculty development program held recently on JCC’s Jamestown Campus.

Mike Jabot, professor of science education at the SUNY Fredonia, and Sherri A. Mason, associate professor of chemistry at SUNY Fredonia, delivered the keynote address, “Why Educate for Sustainability?”

The presentation, describing sustainability as the “ultimate liberal art,” encouraged thinking among all academic disciplines to allow humans to sustain themselves on Earth. Drs. Jabot and Mason also led a hands-on simulation titled “The Fish Game,” engaging faculty in an interactive, replicable, interdisciplinary activity combining systems thinking tools, ecological systems, and economics in a move toward a more sustainable future.

Phi Theta Kappa Inductions Held

Ninety students at JCC’s Jamestown Campus and 30 students at the Cattaraugus County Campus were inducted into Phi Theta Kappa, the national two-year college honor fraternity, recently.
 
A student must achieve at least a 3.50 grade point average to be considered for induction and must have two faculty recommendations.
 
Darren M. Williams, associate professor of physics/astronomy at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, and a 1990 JCC graduate, was the guest speaker for the Jamestown Campus ceremony.

Fall 2010 Part-time Dean's List

Students named to the fall 2010 part-time student dean’s list at JCC earned at least a 3.50 average, equal to a B plus or better, in six to 11 credit hours of letter-graded work. Named to the dean’s list are:    
            

Bonnie Loch Fiddlers Will Perform

As part of the Rising Star Series at JCC’s Cattaraugus County Campus, the Bonnie Loch Fiddlers will perform at 7 p.m. on March 10 in the Cutco Theater.
 
The free performance will include a blend of traditional, contemporary, and original Celtic music.

A Midsummer Night's Dream Open March 11

The JCC Uncommoners’ production of William Shakespeare’s comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream opens March 11.

Performances are set for 8 p.m. on March 11, 12, 18, and 19 in JCC’s Scharmann Theatre.  A matinee performance will be given on March 13 at 2 p.m.         

The cast includes JCC students Michael Correy, Tyler Drew, Maeghan Farnham, Maxton Honeychurch, Maddie Schlick, and Amanda Wickmark. Also in the cast are Sonia Angeli, Kristina Benson, Lars Benson, Ian Bishop, Ashley Carnes, Noah Goodling, Raleigh Hawk, Don Hill, Pete Larson, Michael Magnuson, Nicole Pattison, Thomas Smith, and Matt Warren.

Admission prices are $7, general public, $6, area students and senior citizens, and $5, JCC Faculty Student Association members. Tickets can be purchased by calling JCC’s box office, 338.1187.
 
 

Native American Film Festival Planned

A festival featuring Native American themes and performances by renowned Native Americans Gary Farmer and Kevin Locke will be featured during JCC’s Native American Film Festival in March.

The festival, which features events on March 10 and 11 in the Lenna Teleconference Theatre on JCC’s Jamestown Campus and on March 18 at the Fredonia Opera House, is sponsored by JCC’s Faculty Student Association and College Program Committee.

“We’re very excited this year to host a night of student films,” notes Ms. Bessette, associate professor of anthropology and festival organizer. “We have an unusual opportunity to showcase a film by one of our own students, and then we’ll follow it with some short films created by Native students from different areas across the country.”

“The Linguists” To Be Shown

K. David Harrison, a linguist and activist for the documentation and preservation of endangered languages, will be present during the screening of the Sundance Film Festival documentary, “The Linguists,” on March 8 at JCC’s Jamestown Campus.

The program, which begins at 7 p.m. in the Student Union, is free and open to the public. Program sponsors are the Katharine Jackson Carnahan Endowment for the Arts and the college program committee of JCC’s Faculty Student Association.

“The Linguists,” produced by Ironbound Films and nominated for an Emmy in 2008, presents the efforts by Dr. Harrison and fellow linguist Gregory Anderson to locate and meet with the last speakers of some of the world’s most endangered languages.

Adult Learner Information Night March 9

JCC will hold an Adult Learner Information Night at 6 p.m. on March 9 on the Jamestown Campus. Visitors are encouraged to check in at the admissions office, located in the Hamilton Collegiate Center.

The program provides individuals who have been out of high school for several years and are considering college to meet one-on-one with JCC admissions representatives. Detailed information on JCC’s degrees and certificates, non-credit offerings, and financial aid and student support services will be provided. Students who have previous college credit can explore how to transfer credits into JCC.

Visitors can tour the campus and schedule follow-up appointments for academic advisement. For additional information, call the JCC admissions office, 716.338.1001.
 

Middle School Challenge Planned

 The sixth annual Middle School Challenge, an academic quiz bowl competition featuring teams from Beaty-Warren Middle School, Fillmore Central School, Fredonia Middle School, Friendship Central School, Otto-Eldred Central School, Ripley Central School, Sherman Central School, and Southwestern Central School, will be held Saturday, March 12, beginning at 9 a.m. at JCC’s Jamestown Campus.

Spectators are welcome to attend the matches, which will be conducted in Lenna Theatre in Hultquist Library.

Match times are: Fredonia vs. Southwestern, 9 a.m.; Ripley vs. Betty-Warren, 9:30, Sherman vs. Otto-Eldred, 10, and Fillmore vs. Friendship, 10:30.

The semifinal matches begin at 11:15 and 11:45 with the championship match expected to begin at 12:30 p.m.
 
 

Students Give JCC High Grades on SUNY Survey

The students have spoken, and, according to the 2010 Student Opinion Survey administered by the State University of New York (SUNY), JCC earned top grades.

“We have been very pleased with the top grades JCC received in previous years’ surveys, but this year’s results indicate that the college has continued to grow even stronger,” said JCC President Gregory T. DeCinque. “The survey assessed student opinions in category clusters titled college impressions and plans, college services and facilities, and college environment, experiences, and outcomes. This feedback is particularly important because it comes from the individuals who know us best – our students.”

Computer Forensics Lecture February 23

Computer forensics will be the focus of a Communiversity lecture at JCC at noon and 5 p.m. on February 23.

The lectures, which had been originally scheduled for February 2, will be presented at noon and 5 p.m. in the Lenna Teleconference Theatre in Hultquist Library on the Jamestown Campus. The noon lecture will be available in the Allied Health and Sciences Center on the Cattaraugus County Campus via interactive television. The presentations are free and open to the public.

Keynote speaker Steven M. MacMartin will discuss “Computer Crime Investigation in the Criminal and Corporate World and the Role of Computer Forensics.” A senior special agent/criminal investigator with the U.S. Customs Office and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, MacMartin is also an adjunct faculty member at Medaille College.

“Feiffer’s People” Will Be Presented

The JCC Theater & Culture Club will present the ensemble sketch comedy “Feiffer’s People” by American author and humorist Jules Feiffer at 7 p.m. on February 18 and 19 in Cutco Theater on JCC’s Cattaraugus County Campus.

Admission for the inaugural student production is $3 for general admission and $2 for students. Tickets will be available at the door.

JCC student Sara Kuhn will serve as stage manager and Anna Bush, JCC’s employment development specialist and club advisor, will direct.

Inventive and experimental, the show offers humorous sketches, monologues, and playlets about the foibles of contemporary civilization, focusing on male-female relationships. Feiffer is known for his talents as satirist, cartoonist for the Village Voice, and author of several books and plays including Carnal Knowledge and Little Murders.

JCC Awarded HESC Grant

Area low income students who may never have thought they could go to college will benefit from a local program to help them prepare to enroll and succeed in college with funds from New York’s College Access Challenge Grant (CACG).

The New York State Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC) recently awarded a $50,000 federal CACG award to the GEAR UP program at JCC to help disadvantaged students gain access to college.

New York’s CACG program aims to improve college awareness, readiness, attendance, and degree attainment through early outreach to families, particularly those with incomes below the poverty level, and through professional development of middle and high school counselors. Funds also support programs that provide services to high school and college students with an overall objective of increasing college degree attainment for underrepresented populations.

Transfer Agreements Announced

Daemen College
JCC and Daemen College have signed an agreement to guarantee admission of JCC graduates into Daemen’s physical therapy degree programs.

Students who complete JCC’s Associate in Science: Liberal Arts and Sciences: Math & Science degree can continue their studies at Daemen as pre-professional physical therapy majors. The agreement assures that JCC graduates can complete all requirements for Daemen’s Bachelor of Science in natural science and Doctor of Physical Therapy degrees in four calendar years of study.

Daemen, located in Amherst, NY, has a total enrollment of nearly 3000 undergraduate and graduate students. Established in 1947, Daemen is a private, nonsectarian, co-educational, comprehensive college.

WCA Hospital, Bradford Regional Medical Center

Computer Forensics Lecture Cancelled

The Medaille College Communiversity lectures on computer forensics scheduled for February 2 at JCC's Jamestown Campus are cancelled and will be rescheduled for a later date. 
 
 

IES Teacher Recruitment Sessions Set

Internationella Engelska Skolan (IES), a Swedish-based organization operating 17 independent schools, will conduct teacher recruitment fairs in the area in February and March.

IES, with which JCC established a partnership recently, is recruiting certified, native English-speaking teachers for academic year instruction in Sweden. IES schools enroll over 9,000 students in Sweden.

Peter John Fyles, chief executive officer, and Damian Brunker, head of academics, will outline IES and its programs at 5 p.m. on February 28 at Edinboro University, at 4 p.m. on March 1 at the State University of New York at Fredonia, and at 3:30 p.m. on March 2 at JCC’s Jamestown Campus.

Juror’s Choice Show Opens February 18

The Cattaraugus County Arts Council and JCC will present an opening reception for “Juror’s Choice: Member Show Winners” exhibition on February 18 in the Center Gallery, located on the second floor in College Center on JCC's Cattaraugus County Campus.

The reception begins at 6 p.m. and includes hors d’oeuvres and wine tasting. A brief introduction and talk begin at 6:30 p.m.

The exhibition will be on display until April 1. Hours are Monday-Thursday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

College Connections Forums Planned

Parents of high school students who are taking courses through JCC’s College Connections program are invited to a public forum to learn more about the program.

The forums will be held at JCC locations from 7 to 8 p.m. Sessions are set for February 7 at the North County Center in Dunkirk, February 10 at the Cattaraugus County Campus in Olean, and February 17 at the Jamestown Campus. Reservations are not required.

Maria Kindberg, College Connections coordinator, will provide details on courses available to qualified students through the program at area high schools.

Students participating in the program complete the Accuplacer placement test required of all JCC students and their courses are taught by high school teachers who meet the same educational and professional requirements as on-campus instructors.

College Goal Program Planned

College Goal Sunday, a nationwide program that helps students from first generation and low-income families complete their electronic Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), will be held from 1-3 p.m. on Saturday, February 5, at Falconer Central School. Although the event is labeled College Goal Sunday, the date of the event is definitely Saturday.

The event is a service project of the New York State Financial Aid Administrators Association and the New York State Higher Education Services Corporation and is funded through a grant from the Lumina Foundation.

Community Reads Project Slated

The Community Reads Project at JCCs Cattaraugus County Campus has chosen Love Medicine by Louise Erdrich as its next reading selection. 

The Community Reads Project is part of the “one book, one community” movement that has spread across the U.S. from Seattle where it originated.

Community Reads is sponsored by the Olean Public Library and JCC’s Cattaraugus County Campus Program Committee and Faculty Student Association. All events are free and open to the public. Paperback copies of Love Medicine are available for $5 in JCC’s campus store.

Set in and around the Turtle Mountain Chippewa Reservation in North Dakota, Love Medicine features three generations of the Kapshaw and Lamartine families narrating a collection of stories spanning 50 years.

ArtParty Features Music, Art

Celtic rock performed by Scythian will be featured during the opening reception for “Dan Reidy and Nathan Naetzker: Fact, Fiction, and Fantasy” on February 5 in the Weeks Gallery on JCC’s Jamestown Campus.

The artists will be introduced at 6:30 p.m. Scythian performs at 7 and a reception, featuring hors d’oeuvres, wine and beer tasting, begins at 8:30.

Tickets for the event can be obtained through JCC’s box office, 338.1187. Admission is $15 for the general public, $10 for area students and senior citizens, $8 for JCC Faculty Student Association members, and $5 for children 12 and under.

The Weeks Gallery is open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Wednesday; 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Thursday; and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Friday. The gallery is closed on college holidays.
