Carrubba Named To JCC Board Of Trustees

Marie T. Carrubba has been appointed to JCC's board of trustees by Governor Andrew Cuomo. Her term will expire in June 2018.

Ms. Carrubba, executive director of the Southwestern Independent Living Center, Inc. since 1984, earned bachelor’s and juris doctor degrees at the University of Buffalo. She was admitted to the New York State Bar in 1983.
 
She is a member of the boards of directors of The Resource Center, TRC Foundation, Chautauqua Opportunities, and the Chautauqua County Workforce Investment Board and Chautauqua County Community Services Board. A mediator for the Center for Resolution and Justice since 2002, Ms. Carrubba has been chairperson of the City of Jamestown Human Rights Commission since 2000 and the Chautauqua County Persons With Developmental Disabilities Committee since 2004.

Several Join JCC's Faculty

Several individuals joined JCC’s faculty at the Jamestown and Cattaraugus County campuses this spring.
 
Jessica Kubiak, who served previously as JCC’s director of academic initiatives and experiential learning coordinator, is now a reading/composition instructor on the Cattaraugus County Campus. She earned a bachelor’s degree in English at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford and a master’s degree in adult education at Buffalo State College. Ms. Kubiak has taught high school and college level writing, composition, and English as a Second Language courses.

Ken Loomis, a computer science instructor on the Jamestown Campus, holds a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Edinboro University and a master’s degree in computer science from Worcester Polytechnic Institute. He interned at Argonne National Laboratories and has been a teaching assistant and tutor for college courses.

Endangered Earth Film Series Begins April 9

A four-part “Endangered Earth” film series, sponsored by JCC’s office of sustainability, begins April 9. Free and open to the public, the films are shown at 7 p.m. in the Carnahan Center Theatre. A guided discussion is conducted at the conclusion of each film.

Agreement Between JCC, UPB Finalized

JCC has signed a transfer agreement for students interested in the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford’s general studies degree. The agreement is designed for students who intend to pursue an associate’s degree at JCC and then transfer to Pitt-Bradford’s bachelor of arts degree program in general studies.

JCC, SUNY Brockport Update Transfer Agreement

An updated articulation agreement will ease the transfer of JCC graduates into SUNY Brockport’s physical education teacher education degree programs.

Students who graduate with an associate’s degree from JCC, and who are accepted by SUNY Brockport, are guaranteed junior standing and the transfer of at least 60, and up to 64, credit hours. Students who complete specified courses as part of their associate’s degree can normally complete the bachelor’s degree in five semesters, including a semester of student teaching.

SUNY Brockport, established in 1835, has an undergraduate population of about 7,200 students. The college offers 49 undergraduate majors, 47 master’s degree programs, and teacher certification in 24 areas.
 

Earthfest Will Be Held April 24

JCC’s annual Earthfest to celebrate Earth Day will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 24. The event, sponsored by JCC’s Earth Awareness Club and the college program committee of the JCC Faculty Student Association, is free and open to the public.

Weather permitting, Earthfest will be held outside the Hamilton Collegiate Center near the pond. Otherwise, the program is held in the Student Union.

Earthfest features music by local guitartist Jamie Haight, a presentation by Jeff Musial of Nickel City Reptiles and Exotics, ecofriendly products, and educational displays. 
 

Erie Canal Stories, Songs Focus Of April Program

Performer Dave Ruch will present “Songs and Stories of the Erie Canal” at 1:15 p.m. on April 17 in Cutco Theater on JCC’s Cattaraugus County Campus in Olean. The program, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by JCC’s campus program committee.
 
Ruch has spent decades researching music and life on the Erie Canal, and offers songs and stories from the days of “Clinton’s Ditch” during his concert. He sings and plays music for all ages on an intriguing assortment of instruments including mandolin, banjo, guitar, jaw harp, bones, spoons, and more.

3-D Printing Technology Being Used At JCC

A leading technology touted in President Barack Obama’s recent State of the Union address is already part of the curriculum at JCC’s Manufacturing Technology Institute. President Obama described the burgeoning field of 3-D printing as having the potential to fuel new high-tech jobs in the United States.
 
Michael Weaver, JCC’s director of engineering science and technology, concurs with the president and other advocates who say that 3-D printing could change the face of manufacturing.
 

Nursing Job, Education Fair Planned

JCC will host a nursing job and education fair from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on March 22 in the Carnahan Center on JCC’s Jamestown Campus.

Healthcare employers and representatives of four-year colleges have been invited to provide information on healthcare career and educational opportunities. Visitors should bring several copies of their resume and dress appropriately since they will meet with potential employers.

Design Your Potential Program Focuses On STEM Careers

Over 60 girls from area high schools explored career opportunities in science, the technologies, engineering, and math (STEM) at an event titled “Design Your Potential” on JCC’s Jamestown Campus. Sponsored by the College Access Challenge Grant, the program included workshops on a variety of topics including astronomy, architecture, computer science, geology, information technology, math, meteorology, physics, sustainability, and welding as well as a panel discussion featuring JCC students.

According to Ashley Kalish, College Access program coordinator, women are underrepresented in the workforce in all of the STEM disciplines.
 

JCC Pilots Middle School STEM Program

Twenty George Washington Middle School students are participating in a pilot program featuring specialized instruction at JCC’s Jamestown Campus.

Based on a Science Across the Curriculum initiative that was first launched at Holy Family Catholic School, the program provides supplemental exposure to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) concepts to a small group of seventh and eighth grade students at Washington Middle School.

“We are very excited to have this wonderful opportunity for our students,” said Washington Middle School principal Melissa Emerson. “Any opportunity where our students receive more hands-on experience outside of the classroom is a welcomed addition to the support in the classroom. With the new Common Core Standards and changes in education, Project STEM is another step in the process of preparing our students to be college ready. We are extremely thankful for this opportunity.”

College Connections Serves 30 Schools

Since 1998, JCC has offered concurrent enrollment courses to qualified high school juniors and seniors through the College Connections program. These courses, offered during the high school day by JCC approved high school teachers, allow students to earn both high school and college credit. In recent years, the program has grown to include more than 1500 students each year.

Theatre Performances Open March 15

The JCC Uncommoners will perform its spring show, A.R. Gurney’s Sylvia, beginning March 15. Performances are set for 8 p.m. on March 15, 16, 22, and 23 and 2 p.m. on March 24. The show will be directed by Robert Schlick with technical direction by Steven Gustafson.

Jamestown Cycle Shop Establishing Athletic Fund

Jamestown Cycle Shop is establishing an athletics endowment at JCC’s Jamestown Campus to provide scholarships for the educational expenses of full-time student athletes.

“Jamestown Cycle Shop has always had a great relationship with JCC's athletics program, staff, and athletes,” said Steve Deyo, Jamestown Cycle Shop owner. “We want to do something to encourage and support JCC. Endowing a fund to help JCC athletes is the right thing to do, and will provide support for decades to come.”

JCC’s intercollegiate athletics program features 11 teams on the Jamestown Campus. A total of 189 student-athletes participated in team sports in 2012.

Explore JCC Features Outlined

JCC’s Jamestown Campus will hold Explore JCC, an open house for high school students and others, from 10 a.m. to noon on March 16. Participants can also choose from among sessions on internships, financial aid, JCC’s honors program, transferability of JCC credits, and options for undecided students.

A campus fair featuring information on academic programs and student services will be held from 10 to 11:30 in the Student Union. Guided campus tours will begin at 11:30.

Study, Work Experience In Guatemala Offered

Spanish in Guatemala: Explore and Volunteer, a four-credit course that provides participants the opportunity to receive instruction in Spanish and perform career-related volunteer work in Antigua, will be offered June 30 through July 14 by JCC. The course, which is open to the public, is designed for individuals hoping to learn or improve their Spanish.
 
The cost of the trip, which includes housing, meals, and roundtrip airfare to Guatemala City, travel insurance, and excursions is $2800. The first deposit is due March 30, 2013. Phi Theta Kappa Members Inducted

Induction of new members into the Phi Theta Kappa chapters on JCC's Jamestown and Cattaraugus County campuses were held. Phi Theta Kappa is the national two-year college honor fraternity. A student must achieve at least a 3.50 grade point average to be considered for induction.

Eighty-two students were inducted into the Alpha Kappa Beta chapter on February 23. Terry Schultz, doctor of optometry and a 1970 JCC alumnus, was the guest speaker.

Muslim Journeys Collection Awarded To JCC

JCC has been awarded the Muslim Journeys Bookshelf collection by the National Endowment for the Humanities. The collection contains 25 books, three films, and access for one year to Oxford Islamic Studies Online.

Over 840 libraries and state humanities councils throughout the country were awarded the collection, which is comprised of books, films, and other resources designed to introduce the American public to the complex history and culture of Muslims in the United States and around the world.

Developed by the NEH and the American Library Association based on the advice of scholars, librarians, and other public programming experts, the Muslim Journeys Bookshelf is intended to address both the need and desire of the American public for trustworthy and accessible resources about Muslim beliefs and practices and the cultural heritage associated with Islamic civilizations.

InterVarsity Christian Fellowship Coffeehouse Planned

The Archangels will perform during a coffeehouse at JCC’s Jamestown Campus on March 20. The 7 p.m. performance, sponsored by the InterVarsity Christian Fellowship student club at JCC, will be held in the Student Union.

Sylvia is a play about Greg (Vince Joy) and Kate (Kristina Benson) who have moved to Manhattan after 22 years of childrearing in the suburbs. Greg’s career as a financial trader is winding down, while Kate’s career as a public school English teacher is beginning to offer her more opportunities.

JCC will host its Explore JCC open house on March 2 at the Cattaraugus County Campus in Olean and on March 16 at the Jamestown Campus. Both programs, designed for high school students and others, will be held from 10 a.m. to noon.
 
A campus fair featuring information on academic programs and student services will be held throughout each event. Campus tours are available, as are presentations on financial aid and choices for undecided students.

JCC To Use SUNY Standard Financial Aid Award Letter

JCC and all other SUNY campuses will use a standard financial aid award letter for the 2013-14 academic year as part of the SUNY Smart Track™ campaign, SUNY’s commitment to college cost transparency and a reduction in student debt.

“JCC recognizes there are many important considerations for families planning for college, including academic quality, a caring environment, transferability, preparing for the next steps in education and career plans, and value,” notes Laurie Vorp, executive director of student finance and records.

“The new SUNY Smart Track™ Award Letter will assist them by providing clear information about the financial aspect of their planning,” Ms. Vorp added. “As 85% of JCC’s first time full-time students receive aid from federal, state, or college sources, we expect this new format will be helpful to many of our students’ families.”

Get In The Game Program Planned

Registrations are being taken for the 14th annual Get in the Game program for girls in grades 4-7 sponsored by JCC and the Jamestown branch of the Association of American University Women (AAUW) on March 9. The event, which celebrates National Girls and Women in Sports Day, will be held in the Physical Education Complex on JCC's Jamestown Campus from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The registration fee is $12.
 
During the event, participants will rotate through eight different sports: kayaking, rugby, soccer, zumba, circuit training, self-defense, track, and basketball. During the 13 years that AAUW and JCC have co-sponsored this event, over 1,500 girls have been given the opportunity to experience new sports, learn about teamwork, and increase their own self-esteem and self-confidence.
 

Nominations Sought For Alumni Award

Nominations are due March 1 for the 2013 Distinguished Alumnus Award offered by the alumni associations at JCC's Jamestown and Cattaraugus County campuses.
 
The award, an annual form of recognition on behalf of each association, recognizes JCC alumni who have distinguished themselves in their careers and/or in service to their communities.
 
All nominations will be reviewed by representatives of the Alumni Association board of directors, and up to two awards will be presented at the college's commencement ceremonies on May 17 in Olean and on May 18 in Jamestown.
