Lake of Betrayal, a 2017 documentary about the displacement of Seneca Indians to create the Kinzua Dam and reservoir, will be shown at JCC’s Jamestown Campus on November 7.
The film, which is free and open to the public, begins at 7 p.m. in the Carnahan Center Theatre.
The screening is sponsored by JCC’s college program committee in conjunction with the Jamestown chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Katharine Jackson Carnahan Endowment for the Humanities.
Caleb Abrams, a JCC alumnus and the film's associate producer, writer/director Paul Lamont and writer/producer Scott Sackett will lead a discussion after the film about the impact of the removal of the Senecas and seven non-native communities from their ancestral lands.
Completed in 1965, the dam was created on the Allegheny River to mitigate flooding in Pittsburgh, 198 miles downriver. The 27-mile reservoir that formed above the dam inundated vast tracts of the Seneca Indians' ancestral lands, forcing their removal in breach of one of the United States' oldest treaties.
Lake of Betrayal reveals how a small Native American nation was pitted against some of the strongest political, social, and commercial forces in the country.
