Three members of JCC’s faculty and staff were awarded the 2014 SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence.

Faculty, librarians, and professional service employees who received the SUNY Chancellor’s Award were honored with a certificate and cast bronze medallion. The awards are announced after a SUNY advisory committee reviewed nominations from faculty, students, and colleagues throughout the 64-campus system.

“Faculty and staff who receive the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence have served their students, fellow faculty and staff, campuses, and communities with the utmost distinction, and it is a great honor to be able to recognize them with the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence,” said SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher.

English professor Gael Grossman and associate professor of nursing Kathy S. Taydus received the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. Senior human resources assistant Linda E. Fye received the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Professional Service.

Dr. Grossman, who began teaching at JCC in 2001, is also director of the English, modern languages, philosophy, and religion departments. She earned a bachelor’s degree at the University of Michigan and a master’s degree and doctorate at Michigan State University. She taught previously at Baker Community College, Michigan State University, Reading Area Community College, Washington State Community College, and Marietta College.

She has presented at a variety of regional, national, and international conferences and is a member of the College Reading Learning Association, Kipling Society, National Council of Teachers of English, the Medieval Association of the Midwest, State University of New York Council on Writing, and the National Association for Developmental Education.

Dr. Grossman is a volunteer at the Roger Tory Peterson Institute, Chautauqua County Humane Society, Boy Scouts of America, and the 4th St. Café at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church.

Before joining JCC’s full-time nursing faculty in 2003, Dr. Taydus served as an adjunct faculty clinical instructor. She was acting director of the nursing program in spring 2010 and has served on several college-wide committees. A JCC alumna, Dr. Taydus also earned bachelor’s degrees at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and Clarion University of Pennsylvania, a master’s degree at St. Joseph’s College of Maine, and a doctorate at Waynesburg University. She was a recipient of the 2011 JCC Alumni Nurses of Distinction Award.

Earlier in her career, Dr. Taydus served in a variety of roles at Warren General Hospital, including nurse manager, nurse educator, and hospital home care services director, and as a nurse manager for First American Home Health Care.

Dr. Taydus has been an active volunteer for the First United Methodist Church and the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts in the Warren, PA area.

Ms. Fye, a 1988 JCC alumna, has worked in the human resources office since 2010. She began working at JCC in 1990 and has held positions in the financial aid and business offices.

She served as assistant treasurer of the former JCC Federal Credit Union from 1995-1999, as an income tax preparer for H&R Block from 1997-2001, and as a bookkeeper for Allied Fire Equipment Sales & Service from 1983-2005.

In the community, Ms. Fye was the sponsor coordinator for the Spartans football team in 2012 and 2013 and the parent and volunteer coordinator for the Southwestern Trojans football team in 2013.
