The epic drama of Sophocles’ tragedy Antigone was played out in a modern interpretation when the Jamestown Community College Uncommoners theatre group presented The Punk Antigone at 7:30 p.m. March 26-27 and April 1-3 and at 2 p.m. on March 28 in Scharmann Theatre on JCC’s Jamestown Campus.

The cast included Adam Hughes of Ashville; Erin Tyler of Bemus Point; Nick Dole of Busti; Eric Griffin of Dunkirk; and Stephanie Fisher, Jaclyn Fried, Erik Johanson, Jill Mahon, Erin McCray, Jillian Ploetz, Dan Sheley, and Dan Zabala of Jamestown. Also cast in the production are JCC English faculty members Gael Grossman and Dan Callahan. Rounding out the cast are Angelo Giuffre, Ylsa Turnquist, and Taralyn Sample.

The Punk Antigone was directed by Robert Schlick and features original music written by Steven Gustafson.

After the reign of Oedipus, Antigone’s brothers Polynices and Eteocles are killed while fighting for the right to rule Thebes. Kreon, Antigone’s uncle, becomes the new king, and decrees that Eteocles be given an honorable burial but orders that the body of Polynices, whom he regarded as a traitor, remain where it has fallen. He forbids anyone, on pain of death, to bury Polynices. Antigone, believing divine law must take precedence over earthly decrees, decides she will nonetheless bury her brother. When Kreon learns of Antigone’s actions, he condemns her to be buried alive. A clash of wills between the two characters follows as well as a series of pleas from the people of Thebes for Kreon to listen to reason and change his mind.

Antigone features themes such as the cost of pride, the individual versus the state, moral law versus human law, gender and the position of women in society, and the threat of tyranny. Since these themes are still relevant today, The Punk Antigone will infuse modern imagery into an ancient story. For instance, Antigone will be performed as a young, rebellious punk and her sister, Ismene, as a fashion conscious "mall rat."
