Uncommoners Presented Aida As Fall Musical

The JCC Uncommoners presented their latest musical production, Elton John & Tim Rice’s AIDA, originally produced on Broadway by Disney Theatrical Productions. The storyline is based on the original opera by Verdi, but this new version written by the team of John and Rice (originally paired as a writing team for Disney’s The Lion King) gives the show a rock and roll score. Featured songs are “My Strongest Suit,” “I Know the Truth,” “Elaborate Lives,” “Written in the Stars,” and “The Gods Love Nubia.”

In Aida, Radames, a young Egyptian captain, returns with his soldiers from their recent invasion of Nubia, bringing with them treasure, captives, and the newly enslaved Nubian princess Aida. After she stands up to Radames, who is intrigued by her courage, he sends Aida as a handmaiden to the Egyptian princess Amneris, to whom he is betrothed. Aida struggles between the cries of her people to lead them and the growing passion she develops for Radames. As the love triangle becomes more complicated, Radames is also torn between his affection for Aida and his promise to Amneris.

Aida starred JCC students Nanishka Salva of Jamestown, and James Middleton of Frewsburg as the two lovers. Teal Weatherley was featured as Amneris. Also in the show were students Jessica Abbott, Amber Cooke, Jillianne Dolce, Nick Dole, Stephen Griffin, Jake Harvey, Adam Hughes, Nanishka Salva, and Cat Jones of Jamestown; Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Flanders of Panama; Derrick Lincoln of Cherry Creek; Venessa Hayner of Randolph; and Shaina Miller of Mayville. Rounding out the cast is Ashera Buhite, Mike Ekstrom, Nathan Gibbons, Jeneice Meyers, Amara Offhaus, Maddie Schlick, Matt Smith, Michael Taylor, Don Thomas, Mike Valvo, and Zach Woodfield.

The show was directed by Robert Schlick, technical director was Steven Gustafson, music director was Steve Swanson, and rehearsal pianist was Carol Svensen-Smith, with vocal direction by Fred Dixon. Choreography was by Nicole Ten Eyke. The costumes were designed by Bonnie Gray.

All performances were in the Scharmann Theatre, ARSC building, Jamestown campus. Tickets were $10 general admission, $7 area students and senior citizens, and $4 for FSA cardholders.
