How Do I...
How do I use the library resources when I'm off campus?
Much of the information on the library website is accessible off campus without any special log-in or authentication. However, to use the databases in the alphabetical listing on the Hultquist Library's home page and on the Databases: Articles & More page, you may need to log in.
To access the databases:
- Click on the resource you want to use.
- Your username and password for the library databases is the same as your ANGEL/student computer lab username/password. [Faculty and staff can use their admin. account login]. Your username is your J-number. Your password is your birth date in the format: MMDDYY. For example, if you were born on March 7, 1985, your password will be 030785.
- If you've changed your password and have forgotten what you changed it to, contact the JCC HelpDesk at HelpDesk@mail.sunyjcc.edu. When contacting the JCC HelpDesk, be sure to include your first and last names, your email address, your phone number, and your JCC J-number. DO NOT include your social security number or any passwords.
- If you are having trouble connecting:
- Did you type your username and password correctly?
- Did you include the J when entering your j-number?
- Are cookies enabled on your browser?
- Is your Internet Service Provider working fine otherwise?
If the answer to these questions is "Yes" and you still can't connect, please contact us via e-mail or by phone at (716) 338-1131 for assistance. Please describe the problem in as much detail as possible and note what error message your are getting, if any.

How do I use the library resources when I'm off campus if I'm not a JCC student, faculty, or staff member?
Due to restrictions in our database licensing agreements, we are able to permit off-campus access for subscription-based products only to current Jamestown Community College students, faculty, and staff. Those not affiliated with JCC are welcome to visit our campus libraries and search the full range of databases on our computer workstations.
As part of NOVEL, the New York State Electronic Library initiative, New York state residents are able to connect to a number of databases using their New York state drivers license number or non-driver photo ID card number.
To view a list of the databases available, or to connect to one of the databases go to http://novelnewyork.org/remotenyid_subj.htm

How Do I Find a Book that is Listed as "On Shelf" but is not on the Shelf?
If the library catalog indicates that an item is "On Shelf" but you do not find it on the shelf, go to the Circulation Desk. They will attempt to locate the material and inform you if it is found. Be sure to have the title and call number or volume/issue number of the item you need.

How Do I Find out if the Library Owns a Particular Item?
- Click on the JCC Libraries' Catalog link on the Library home page.
- If you know the title of the material, use the Browse by Title search option and type in the name of the item.
- If you want to get a general idea of the books the library has by a particular author, try the Browse by Author search.

How Do I Find Videos and DVDs?
- Click on the JCC Libraries' Catalog link on the Library home page.
- If you know the title of the material, use the Browse by Title search option and type in the name of the video or DVD.
- If you aren't looking for a known title, start with the General Keyword search option. For example, to find videos and DVDs starring Katharine Hepburn, search for: katharine hepburn and (video* or dvd*) . Use the asterisk to get videorecording, videocassette, and other words that start with video.
- If you want to get a general idea of the types of videos and DVDs the library has, try General Keyword searches such as drama and (video* or dvd*) . You may also want to try Subject searches for terms like comedy films and feature films .
Once you have found the material you need, pay close attention to the call number and location. DVDs and videos owned by the Hultquist Library are for library/classroom use only. DVDs and videos owned by the Cattaraugus Campus Library do circulate to patrons on that campus only.

How Do I Search for an Article on a Particular Subject?
- To search for an article on a particular subject, click on Databases: Articles & More on the Library's home page. This page lists and provides access to the all of the article databases that the JCC Libraries subscribe to. Most of these databases contain thousands of full-text articles from journals, magazines, and newspapers in addition to citations to thousands more.
- To decide which database to search in, look at the subject organization of the databases and their descriptions (by clicking on About). You may want to start out with one of the databases in the General Topic Databases section such as Proquest Direct, Expanded Academic ASAP - InfoTrac, or EBSCO MasterFile Select. Coverage in these databases generally goes back to the mid-1980's. You can search for articles by keyword, subject, author, and usually journal name or article title as well. These databases include articles from magazines and journals. If desired, you can restrict your search to peer-reviewed (scholarly) journals. The Databases: Articles & More page also includes a section for finding newspaper articles. If you have problems accessing a database from off-campus, see the Off-Campus Access Instructions.
- If you need an older article you may need to use a print index rather than an online database.
- Don't hesitate to consult a Reference Librarian for help.

How Do I Reserve a Book so I can get it Next?
Holds may be placed on items in order to be next in line to check them out. To have an item reserved, contact the Hultquist Library Circulation Desk in person or by telephone at (716) 338-1008 or (716) 338-1728.
- Any library patron may place a hold on an item. This allows the Circulation Desk staff to hold it for them when the item is returned.
- As soon as a held item becomes available, the person making the request will be notified that he/she can pick it up within seven days. After seven days, the item will be shelved.
- Any item that has been placed on hold may not be renewed.
