February 6 thru March 15, 2006 Hollywood movie posters trigger our senses with provocative designs. The monumental scale, slick surfaces, saturated colors, and hyper-sensuality are the "mark" of the movie industry. The visual power and gender stereotypes of Indian movie posters are the backdrop for Annu Palakunnathu Matthew's digital images.Hollywood, California is not the largest film industry in the world; it's Bombay, India a.k.a "Bollywood." Bombay's $2 billion industry produces over 800 movies a year, luring approximately 3.5 billion people. " The digital portfolio Bollywood Satirized is a critical commentary on the societal expectations I experienced as a woman growing up in India. To create this work, I start with Indian movie posters, a reflection of popular culture and the melodrama of Indian life," explains Matthew. |

October 9, thru December 13, 2006 Leonard Urso’s paintings, sculptures, and installations are modern, ancient, and Zen-like; thus appealing to eastern and western sensibilities and transcending space and time. His refined sculptures visually compare to minimalist works by artists such as Constantin Brancusi, Hans Arp, and Henri Moore; to prehistoric fetish figures, and to the mysterious Cycladic/Greek burial figures created over 5,000 years ago. Viewers are intrigued by his subtle forms, sophisticated colors, ethereal spaces, and reverent vision. |
