Description

Residence hall students from the Jamestown Campus will assist the sustainability coordinator in promoting conservation, efficiency, recycling, and general sustainable living practices in the residence halls.

These activities will include some or all of the following:

  • Conducting informative sessions on the purpose and methods of energy conservation. Sessions could include the measurement of energy usage with a power meter to identify power hungry devices and highlighting opportunities to conserve.
  • Conducting electricity usage competitions between residence halls over a fixed period of time (1 month). This would include information sessions on the competition, methods to conserve energy, recording kWh meter readings before, during, and after the competition, and publishing the results.
  • Conducting CFL or LED light bulb swaps.
  • Conducting information sessions on what, why, and how to recycle. This could include recycling competitions.
  • Promote and organize carpooling or ride-sharing opportunities.
  • Maintain and eco-rep bulletin board to communicate events, create awareness, publicize energy usage, or promote conservation.

Responsibilities

Students will be responsible for:

  • Participation in all training sessions to develop an understanding and awareness of sustainable living.
  • Participation in learning activities such as reading assignments, videos,  or group discussions to gain a better understanding of the principles of sustainable living.
  • Be able to articulate the principles of sustainability, energy conservation, and recycling on a peer to peer basis.
  • Keeping a thorough and accurate record of activities and their effect.
  • Participation in the computation of data into generalized information.
  • Assisting in analyzing findings, determining recommendations for improvement and writing a report to that effect.
  • Maintaining a professional attitude and demeanor toward both the project and those they come in contact with for the duration of the internship.
  • Maintaining regular communication with the sustainability coordinator in order to schedule activities and maximize time available.
  • Keeping a record of project hours for approval by site supervisor.
  • Completing one personal OR one campus project.

Learning Objectives

  • Students will understand the local contribution to the global issue of sustainability by analyzing the activities of campus residential life.
  • Students will gain a better understanding of the sources, challenges, and impacts of energy conservation, commuting, and recycling in a college residential environment.
  • Students will gain a better understanding of how to articulate the principles of sustainable living to peers.
  • Students will collect and analyze data, and report findings to the campus community, including campus decision-makers.

Training

Additional training will be conducted individually and as necessary.

Context for Internship

This internship utilizes the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment framework; a greenhouse gas emissions assessment is required by all signatories to the commitment.

Teaching Materials

American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment is a high-visibility effort to address global warming by garnering institutional commitments to neutralize greenhouse gas emissions, and to accelerate the research and educational efforts of higher education to equip society to re-stabilize the earth's climate. Clean Air-Cool Planet developed the greenhouse gas calculator available for download. Their tool has is widely used by colleges and universities.
