Job Description:

The Volunteer Lawyers Project’s Chautauqua County Family Court Help Desk (FCHD) provides civil legal advice and assistance to unrepresented low income people in the Chautauqua County Family Court in Mayville. Volunteer attorneys provide income eligible clients with general legal advice and information to assist the client in navigating the complex family court system, and refer clients to community-based resources that may help them with a variety of needs.

Student interns help make a difference in the lives of unrepresented, low income clients and their families, while helping the courts, developing valuable interview skills, gaining substantive knowledge on a range of issues impacting families, and making excellent connections with legal professionals in the nonprofit, private and government sectors.

Requirements:

Prior to working at the FCHD, interns are trained extensively on intake procedure, interview skills, and overall practices and procedures of the FCHD. This is an excellent opportunity for students with an interest in serving low-income communities, working with families, and learning more about the legal system and the significant role it plays in many families’ lives.

Intern needs to drive as part of the placement.

Responsibilities:

Student interns play an important role at the FCHD by screening clients for financial eligibility, conducting client intake interviews to help identify legal issues, and overseeing the daily functions of the FCHD. Interns work with volunteer attorneys by briefing them on the client’s identified issues and observing the attorneys’ advice and counsel session with the clients. Interns also work closely with VLP Staff Attorneys on FCHD program development, assessment, data gathering and implementing quality improvement measures as appropriate.
